Orn ekl imsWendySpmer2194 The Saga Continues in Defence of the Ganaralska Watershed At their 4th Annual General Meeting held last Wednesday evening, members of SAGA learned that due to the overwhelniing success of the 2nd Annual Ganaraska Countryside Adventure, SAGA has successfully wiped out debt accumulated in 0MB hearings hield in recent years. "It's like a great weight has been lifted off our shoulders," stated Niva Rowan, member of SAGA Board of Directors. "Nýow,, we can do the other work in raising people's awareness about their Watershed, so that they will be more interested in getting involved in stewardship of the Ganaraska Watershed. This is why we invited fish biologist, Les Stanfield, te speak at our meeting about the Watershed Report Card." Established by a coalition, Fishermen Involved in Saving Habitat (FISH), the W atershed Report Card is a simple process by which residents test their own çnowledge about the watershed .hey live in and evaluate the relative health of the system. Participants evaluate their watershed in a three-tiered programme which responds te the following questions: what is the relative health of the watershed? what are its sensitîvities? and, ,what can be done to protect the watershed? At the first level, No change in fluoride program The Northumberland and Clarington Board of Education is not te consider a change in their, flouride rinse programn that is held in schools where fluoride is not included in the drinldng water. A '_s. Blakely, Cobourg sought support to, have the program discontinued. Her, request was not supported. Close to flnalizing teaching contract It's a smooth start for both the Separate and Public School Boards in that both are close to fmnalizing teacliing contract. Ahl parties have been discussing the current contracts m apping and resource data is collected, weaknesses in the watershed are noted in the second level, and fmnally, the Report Card acts as a framework within which to plan remediation and preservation action. According to Rowan, the headwaters of the Ganaraska Watershed have been selected by FISH to be a plot project for the Watershed Report Card because "relatively speaking, it is one of the most pristine watersheds in Southern Ontario and it is agreed that it (the watershed) needs this kind of assessment. "We hope to begin the project in 1995 at the headwaters', eventually studying the entire watershed," stated Rowan who emphasizes that this study is just the beginning of collection of data for a more sophisticated Watershed Plan. "The importance of starting with aReport Card is that we, as a community of interested citizens, can do it ourselves." FISH conducted their first Watershed Report Card this past summer in three drainage basins in Prince Edward County -- Bloomfield Creek, Black River and Sawguin River. Following Les Stanfield's workshop on the Watershed Report Card, a new Boardof Directors for SAGA was since 1993. The Separate School Board ratified tentative agreement last week with their ful-time and occasional teachers. At about the same tirne the secondary teachers in the Public Board have voted te accept a contract offer from the board. They supported the offer by an 83% '[ES vote. Terms of the above proposal will not be made public until passcd by the trustees. The Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Separate Board has voted in favour of the tentative contracts' to full-time and occasional teachers. Details of the Separate Board contracts are not expected to be made known for a number of days. nominated. Sometimes, the hand requires training in o'ther technique. Sometinies, as the artists' skill and technique mature, she must reconsider the image in her mind; occasionally, as her vision becomes clearer, she mnay alter the image. Ail the while, her mind and her hand work from the same body. TIhe one is not severed from the other. This is the challenge. Quebec, a part of the body of the artist- nation, struggles with its own identity . .. yet, it would appear from last week's election, that it wishes te continue to play a role in the creation of the masterpiece. We must wait for Quebec to work through this period of conflict and growth. But, we need not wait in absolute silence. The masterpiece called Canada will emerge only if the, hands and the mmnd grow together, as well as independently envisioning that which may be created by their strength in unity. One Canada. One that emerges from the period of conflict and growth a more tangible creation. A masterpiece for ail te look on with admiration and pride. 300 bundies 100 bundles Our sister province, Quebec, was the place of an historic provincial election last week. Quebecers wanted change. They voted marginally for change. Now, the real debate begins. With Jacques Parizeau and his Parti Quebecois leading the province into a private Separation debate, the rest of us Canadians watch, like silent obsceers în a family -dispute. 1And this is the way it must be. The relentless simmering of the Separatist forces has kept ail of Canada on hold long enough. Quebecers must debate amongst themnselves what it is they really want of Canada, and what they have to offer Canada. The issue needs to corne to a boil before our nation can caUl itself seasoned. Our greatest difficulties lie in our youth and ini the geography of the county. Canada is a huge land mass, a giant canvass demanding attention from an emerging artist., As unfamiliar brushstrokes using primitive paint-by-numbers technique attempt to create a masterpiece, the painting which struggles to take shape appears blurred, indistinct. However, the creation of a masterpiece requires sophisticated SPECIAL STOCK CLEARANCE Shingles "&No rthern Globe" 20OYear $ R99 bundie SKYLJGHT $80 "Velux" brand 2' x 41' O includes flashing kit fixed ec These specials are available while quantities last. 85 Station Street, Oronio98 916 Let us Quote on Your Next Project FREE ESTIMATES .......... 1 - "L-L- L'I'ýp 1 lLý4- .. - DELIVERY AVAILABLE
