2 - O0rono Weekly 1mes4 Wednesday, November 2,1994 ) ý Kendaal Column Treading Off the Beaten Track MPP Gord Mils is certainly treading off the beat en track with bis proposai to open the door to ailow volunteers to man election positions ini order to raise funds for a charity or community gronps of their choice sucb as scout, girl guides and others. Over the years and perhaps for ail tirnes in the past it bas been the ruling party that has made appointments for the selection jobs and the appointments are made front those who support the party. If the Conservatives would be in power you knew who would be maning the polling stations. If it was the liberals it was another predicable group. .Milîs is changingal ibis and those in the poils at the coming provincial election wil likely be waving a different flag. It is an interesting decision on the part of our local MPP and it wil be interesting to sce how the challenge will be taken up. Most organizations bave need for funding and this will provide an opporbunity to have a day out and get paid for it and turn the money over to the group of your choice. The resuit of educational tests Over the past couple of weeks resuits of educational provincial testing have been announced by most school boards in the province. The local Northumberland Clarington Board of Education and the Kawartha Peterborough, Northumberland Clarington separate Scbool Board of Education have as well made public their test results. In general it is being stated that 90 percent and even upwards of students are operating at or above their expected grade level and provincial standard for the level. It is rather difficut te know what to make of the resuits of the tests'in reading and writing when i the past there bas been much said about the lack of quality in these two subjecis. The general public bas to be puzzled over the marking in six levels which as far as we cas learn bas no relationship to percentages. It is claimed that the systerni now sets a benchmark position on wbich to build but it would seemi that ail testing would do the same thing. There is no doubt that esting by any means does set some paramet ers and which advancement cas be measured and this bas been a need in the past. It is a beginning and one would hope that it is one that wiil be well measured and open te be iderstood by the general public. Bob Rae has intimated that standards have been set too low and it is not difficult to see how he arrives at this decision using the Level system of measuring. The largest majority of students do corne in Level Three which bas been classified as an adequate level of education. Hardly something to get excited about.. And there bas been statements of assiatance to students witb the test wbich would hardly give a true picture. Improvements must corne well before Grade 9 at which level the tests were taken. The Separate Scbool Board is taking steps already to right what they feel cas be better as far as the level of education is concerrned. Mucb does rest with parents and bere they cas start at an early age by reading te their cbildren. This fact has been well known itbe past but was also borne out in the recent tests and surveys undertaken by the province. With tbe benchmark now set we wiil look for tbe to improvements even if we don't understand the marking system and the process. Is it intended that we do understand? Happenings.... Hypodermie Syringes Found A group of electioneers found a dozen discarded bypodermic syringes and drug containers alongside Main Street in the south- end of Orono on Saturday noon bour of last week. The articles were in a pile and Durham Regional Police were called coming to Village te remnove the articles in a short period of time. A real fan of Doug Gilmour 110W Mary Rutherford bas aiways been a great sport fan especially of the Toronto Blue Jays and the Toronto Maple Leafs. After attending the Saturday night Liberal Dinner and being the winner of the draw she will be more so a fan of the Maple Leafs when they take te tbe ice sometime in the future. The prize was a Doug Gilmour sweater which no doubt Mary will be proud to wear. by Phyllis Lowery The few sbowers we have bad the past few days, bas flot belped the weils in Kendal. From wbat 1 hear there are more familles witbout water or the wells are almost dry. Much as we bate to have it rain in the summertime the truth is brought to us the bard way when the welis go dry, rain is a necessity. Even at the Yukon Tenritories they are suffering from a lack of natural produced hydro, because the water level is down. it seems te bc feast or famine, flot enough rain or too mucb main, no happy medium. The weatber is 'stili staying fairly mild but windy. Saturday and Sunday were certainly nice fali days. Tonigbt is Halloween, it will either turfi cold or ramn it might even snow, tbe weather always secimed to turn nasty on the nigbt I had to take my boys out, standing shivering in the shadows wbile they went up to each and every door even if the ligbts were out in the bouse, it might just mean that wboever lived there was playing tricks on themn and would surprise them hy opening the door and give them some candy. It was so nice then, it wasn't necessary to inspect everytbing tbey brougbt home and the homemade fudge, the popcorn balîs and the candied apples were ail special treats. t was the year after my boys quit door to door, (they were too big for that) that we beard of someone putting sometbing in an apple. I wil neyer understand the mentality of an aduit wbo could endanger a child's life. If you don't want to bc botbered with these little gbosts and ghouls, go out for the evening, do something, but don't barm the children. Saturday was a busy day, the ladies of Kendal United Churcb prepared and served a delicious Ham and Scalloped potate supper. We are pleased te report that we sold out, I would say that it was a worthwbile venture. Thanks te the ladies tbat- prepared the meal, baked the pies, thanks to those who came and served the meal and te those who took over and did the dlean-up job. Thanks to those wbo came from near and far to enjoy the meal, without you it wouldn't bc worthwhile. Ail churches and other organizations must put on events like this to mise money to carry on, no mnaUer how good the food, the servers, the preparers. The customer is the most important. Sunday was Newtonville United Cburcb Anniversary so0 Ian Savage took the service at Kendal, some of the Kendal congregation bad attended the anniversary, 50 were a, few minutes late but we are glad they made it. The opening bymn was, "Unto the Hiils", Ian led the Invitation to Worship, and the Prayer of Approach, the hymn, "Love Divine" was sung. The Prayer of - Self- Examination followed by the Words of Assurance were given. Ian called the children forward, he took some money out of bis pocket and he asked themn who bad some love for sale? Who bad mercy for sale? Who had joy for sale? None of the children could selI him any of these things they are not like bubblegum, you can't buy or seli these things, tbey are not for sale. t is a nice sunny day, I'an told them, would they pay more for a day like this, we have decan air in the country, would they pay mnore for this. We have ail these things and we don't bave to pay for themn, this shows that God does flot charge for the things He gives us. Tbey are free with no conditions attached, gifts from God. The children's hymn was, "The Fam ily of God". 1The Scripture was taken from Ephesians 2: 1 -10. Thetitle of the sermon was "Grace Atone". Do you remnember disciplining your children wben they wouldn't eat at the table? Jello, they can eat, not their peas. Cake goes down fine, but not the potatoes. Did you tell tbemn that they wouldn't get dessert unless tbey ate their vegetables and then gave tbem dessert anyway. This is a way of giving Grace. Grace is flot given by words alone. Some believe that on the day of Judgement God will be standing there with all your bad deeds in one band and your good deeds in' the other, weighing them and we hope that the good outweighs the bad. We do flot gain salvation by earning brownie points. We believe we will ýgain God's salvation by earning, by doing good works. We are flot saved by what we do. We believe that we deserve a good life, a nice home, a new care. We deserve what God gives us. The Bible says, "The wages of sin is death. We ail must die, we are ail building up accounts, for which we are earning wages." Hlow do we obtain salvation? Througb God's love. Wbat is Grace? Grace, it the undeserved gift of God. The Bible says, "ByGre we are saved. ORONO, ONTARIO God is rich in mercy and grace, and He gives it freely to ali, wliether deserved oro- The hymn, 'When Ail Thy ,Mercies' was sung, the Prayer of' Thankfulness and the Prayer of Concern and Commitment given. The closmng hymn was, "Ail Hall the Power", 1In the next few weeks there wil be many events coming up, 1 will report on themi as'they happen. Timely quote .
