The Bantam teain would ike to take this time to thank everybody for the great year that they have helped make possible for the Mackie and Reid hockey club. The teain that was made up of 13 die hard Canadian hockey players Guy Tousignant, Jamie Richter, Brett Maartense, Scott Logan, Brent Logan, Dan Frew, Chris Druey,, Ryan Dewulf, Shaun Hentig, BJ. Hackett, Scott Sawyer and responsible for all the news articles Grant Esler and Devon Witheridge. We can't thank the coaching staff enough, but we'll try, tbank you to John Witheridge, Brian Hackett, Marty Richter and Dwigbt Esler. Thank you's go out to our sponsor Mackie and Reid Paving for providing us with- the wonderful uniforrns, to Scott MacDonald, Dan MacDonald, Bob Witberidge and Dale Frew for keeping the time running on the scoreboard. The members of the Orono Bantains 94/95 Pineridge Atoms head to "A" Finals Pineridge Atoins participated in the St. Paul's Spring Classic toumnament on April 8 and 9. The team was looking to keep in shape for the round robin since they bad a two week ayoff in play. Their opening gaine against St. Paul was played early Saturday rnorning which tbe writer did not make. By ail accounts they played fast and bard and came away 9-1 winers. The MVP of the gaine was John Patrick Pisani wbo scored 3 goals and 3 assists. This led Grono to a game at 5 p.m. vs. Baltimore. They had to don their blue sweaters wbich proved to be lucky. Highlights of the Garne: Aaron Robinson camres in from outside the blue line to score. Chris Bouley shoots from outside the blue line to score. Jeff Slemon bot glove. Ricky Howe scores 3 goals and takes MVP for the gaine. J.P. Pisani froin face off to Chris Bouley on point to Johnny Halik on point wbo scores. Mike Knapp tough on wing. Orono wins 9-2. This win sent Orono to the 'A' Championship on Sunday at 4 p.rn. Their opponents St. Andrews were no match for Orono who's passes and shots were rigbt on today. Highlights of the Game: Jeff Siernon gets shut-out. Aaron Robinson and D.J. Boardinan score 2 goals each. St. Andrew's goalie goes after Mike Knapp, J.P. Pisani and D.J. Boardman out of frustration. Shaun Dejobn checks well along the boards. Kevin Pritchard and Matt Gregg tough on blue line. Jake BonneUta flew Up and down the wing. Aaron Robinson wins MVP for the gaine, and Orono wins 8-0. Congratulations on your 'A' Championship, keep up the bard work for the rest of the playoffs. Pineridge Atoins played their final round robin game Sunday, April 16 in Orono vs. Canadian Statesman. A win guaranteed tbem a spot in the A final. Tbey were short 3 players, with winger Shaun Dejobn off with an injured foot. Canadian Statesman got on the board first -While shorthanded at 8:16 of the first. This fired up Pineridge and Scott Wood had Orono's first good chance to score but was checked at the last minute. Johnny Halik had 2 great chances to score at the endof the period but the Canadian Statesman goalie was bot. He, then took a sasing penalty at the buzzer. While shorthanded Ricky Howe got a piece of the goalie and tben managed to kill.off the penalty. The line of Scott Wood, Mike Knapp and J.P. Pisani worked bard and had their slaps at the puck. The Canadian Statesman were busy at thec other end but Jeff Shernon was hot as a pistol for the rest of the gaine. Mike Knapp rissed froin out front as the goalie got a piece of it and the Wood, Knapp, Pisani line had a great sbift. With only two lines the boys got lots of ice and tbe other line of Ricky Howe, D.J. Boardinan and Nick Lucyk put on quite a show as they were finally able to break past the C.S. goalie. Withý Howe and Boardman digging it out front, Nick Lucyk was able to score a big one for Orono at 1:40 of the second. This sceemed to fire everyone up and tbey payed offensive hockey in the third while Canadian Statesman took a defensive stance. Johnny Halik and Chris Bouley let rockets go from the point and Milce Knapp put out great effort bebind the net getting the puck out front several turnes wbere Pisani and Wood tried to put it away. Aaron Robinson tried several times to break away and was successful a couple of imes. The defensive work by Matt Gregg was Sonbon Home Flyers 'B' Champs The Newcastle Sonbon Home Ftyers Old Timers participated in the Niagara Falls Cataracts tournament on the weekend of March 24-26 and won the'B' Championship in the Labatts 50 Division. First Gaine: Newcastle Flyers - 7; Westmall Fossils -4 The first game played on Friday evening was a rather sloppy affair ini which the Flyers outlasted the Westmall Fossils 7- 4. Terry McKee led the attack with 3 goals and 2 assists, Gary Sherban had 2 goals and 2 assists, and Dave McKee had 4 assists. Dave Harris and Craig McLeod scored single goals with Mark Siemon, Dave Wright and Gord McGrath earning assists. £çQfldDamç Newcastle Flyers - 6; Camibridge Old Crocs - 1 The Flyers were up bnight and early on Saturday for an 8:00 a.m. game against the Cambridge Old Crocs and after a slow start scored 5 second period goals for a 6-1 victory. Gary Cbapman picked up 2 goals with Gary Sherban, Paul Slemon, Dave McKee and Dave Wright scoring one each. Dave Harris and Terry McKee assisted on 2 goals eacb with Gord McGrath, Dave Wright and Jack Vernon earning an assist. MiiEým ý Burlington Old Devils - 3; Newcastle Flyers-1 In the third game played on Saturday afternoon the Flyers were beaten by a pesky Burlington team 3-1. The game was an evenly played affair but the Flyers could not capitalize on their scoring chances. Dave Wright scored the only goal rîght off a faceoff in the Burlington end zone.. Burlington won the round robin with a 3-0 record to advance to the 'A' Championsbip. The Flyers ended up 2-1 and advanced to the 'B' Championship against the Oakville Old Pistons. 'B'haMpionship: Newcastle Flyers - 7; Oakville - 3 The 'B' Championship game was played Sunday afternoon and the Flyers came out flying for an easy 7-3 victory over the Oakville Old Pistons. Seven different players shared i the goal scoring. Dave Wright 1 3 Craig McLeod 1 1 appreciated by goalie Siemon on several occasions. Orono finaily went ahead at 9:47 of the third with Ricky Howe poking in the pass from Nick Lucyk. Orono was able to bang on for the win which was overshadowed for a moment by a brewhaha with 10 sec. remainmng in the gaine. The boys now go on to face Crow's Sports next Saturday for the 'A' Championship. The games will bc played at the G.B. Rickard Complex in Bowmanville at 10:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. if necessary. Corne out and cheer the boys on as they play proudly for Orono. in tourney Paul Shemon 1 1 Gary Sherban 1 Brad Wilson 1 Mark Slemon 1 Dave Harris 1 Terry McKee 2 Gary Chaprnan 1 Brad Wilson picked up the Louisville hockey stick for the game winning goal and Dave Wright won a sweatshirt as the game's Most Valuable Player. Cam Wilson was very steady in the Flyers' net coming up with the big saves when required in every game.
