On April 22, 1970, the first EARTH DAY was held. Millions of people cclebrated their relationship witb the Earth. At the saine tinie, tbey protested the violent, destructive and wastcful ways of buman beings. What is it about us that we cari create magnificent works of art, music and literature, on the one hand, while the other fiddles with natural processes, and wields its destructive power over people, animais and the land which sustains us? How is it that we cani put our minds te work with the complex inquiries of pbilosophy, spirituality and science in the quest for reason and logic while our conduct adds incomprebensible dimensions to the chaos of the universe? How is it that a brilliant sunrise inspires? Or that the soaring grace of a hawk quiets the breast? How is it that a child cari find wonder in the flight of the bec among the dandelions? How is it that the rcturn of the song of the birds in spring and the leafing of tbe trees and the blooming of the crocuses seduce the senses and urge tbe human spirit onward with optimism and vitality? Meanwhile, how is it that rape, war, gluttony and pollution plague the planet? Itfs fot as if the soldier doesn't appreciate die dawning of a new day. Itfsflot as if we have lost a fascination with the industry of the bec hive. And, itfsflot as if we are unaffected by the semsons. Itfsflot as if, then, that we are ready to give up on the enchantment of life. We just nced to remind ourselves -- every day -- is another Eartb Day.
