CRIMESTOPPERS Really Stop Crime . CRIMESTOPPERS is a world- wide non-profit crime solving pro- gram which functions as a com- munity based partnership comprised of members of the pub- lic, news media, and the police. The CRIMESTOPPERS goal is to encourage the public to commu- nicate (by telephone) information they may possess regarding crimi- nal activity to the program. This information is then shared with the police to assist in criminal investi- gations. The news media main- tains an integral role in the part- nership by informing the public of unsolved crime at the request of CRIMESTOPPERS. Callers never have to give a name or testify in a court of law. They also qualify for a cash reward if their information leads to an arrest. The Durham Region CRIMESTOPPERS program which commenced operation in 1986 is governed by a Board of Directors represented by concerned citizens from al walks of life. CRIMESTOPPERS and the Durham Regional Police are asking for the public's assistance in solv- ing a robbery which occurred in Oshawa on June 21st of this year. At approximately 10:30 pn a city wide cab driver picked up a fare at the parking lot of McDonald's Restaurant situated at King St. E. and Townline Road. The fare requested that he be taken to a location in the south end of the city. As the cab driver approached the desired area the passenger placed a metal object on the back of the driver's neck. He was very concerned as he felt that the object was possibly a gun. The passenger instructed the driver to drive his cab to a park in the area located at Glen St. and Malaga Rd. at which time he forcibly pulled the driver from his cab, throwing him to the ground. This party then robbed the driver of a quantity of cash which he carried on his per- son. The suspect then fled the scene on foot to a nearby wooded area. The suspect is described as male, black. approxirnately 30 years of age. 5 ft 7" to 5 ft 8" in Returning? Over the past couple of weeks I have been favoured with the sighting of three active Osprey nests in the not too distant area from Orono. There has been concern over the past few decades that the Osprey population in Ontario has been in decline. The cause has been due to the use of insecticides that reach the waters in which the main food supply, fish, are available for this distinguished-looking bird. Twenty years ago Jim Richards accords in his book on Birds of Durham notes that the Osprey is 'n uncommon transient The success of CRIMESTOP- PERS in the Durham Region is clearly reflected by the program statistical record since inception. •persons arrested-986 •Cases cleared by criminal charge- 1361 •Criminal Charges Laid-3052 •Dollar Value of Recovered • Property-$1,869,626.00 •Dollar Value of Seized Narcotics-$4, 157,290.00 •Telephone Calls Received-6833 Crime Prevention is a commu- nity concern. There is an indication now that the bird is increasing in numbers and a volunteer survey is being conducted this summer which will report their findings and corne to a conclusion as to the status of the Osprey population. In two of the recent sightings there were young in the nest and there was indication that such also was a fact in the third. The first sighting was made just off-shore from Emily Park and a couple of heads of .young were popping up upon calls from the parent. In this case the parent did have a fish in claws and was making passes over the nest. Continucd brom page 6 about families show us how they cooperated ,t fan'ilies. It is also important for children to know that they are part of a neighbourhood family and part of the fanily of God and that they are loved and respected and that they are cared for even when thev feel alone. The week finishes off with a SonTown Street Fair when parents and friends will corne to hear the kids of SonTown share their songs. The second sighting was made on the south side of Omnemee along the course of the Scugog River. The adult bird stood perched on the edge of the massive nest on an old dead stump some distance from the road. Although no young were seen it is likely they did exist with the parent apparently standing on guard. The third sighting was made last Sunday on a return trip from the Kirkfield area. I am not sure just exactly where I was but it was in the area of Balsam Lake. Driving along the road there exists a large nest atop a hydro/telephone pole on which an adut was perched. Stopping a distance past the nest heads ofyoung were seen popping up. The aduit flew off the nest and was carrying an eight to ten inch fish in its claws, circled around a couple of time, and again cane to settle on the nest. I have also heard of two other location in the Rice Lake area where Ospreys are now nesting. It would appear they nay well be making a comneback. The bird is a stately bird with its white head, dark colours and black under knuckles at its wing joints. It plunges into the water feet-first at a considerable speed to catch it's only source of food, fish. It is interesting that its claws are equipped with sharp horny processes whicln hold the slimmy fish. The bird is also well aware of aerodynamics as it always carries it catch head first in the direction it is flying. It makes for the least air resistance. Further the bird is equipped with a two section wing that allows it to release itself from the water after it's dive. This bird has made for an interesting bit of birding of late.
