Thai is the Question of the Week asked by the Opinion- Line on Youth Issues., The Ad Hoc Comrnitiee to Assisi Youth, is encouraging people (both youth and adults) from alI around Claringion to cal the Opinion Line (697-3132) and let themn know what they think. The Clarington Town Council has given the Ad Hoc Committee to Assist Youth the mandate to look into youth issues in Clarington. Specifically. the objective of the Cornmittee îs to ascertaîn whether prob- lems among youth in Clarington currently exisi, wheiher problems will likely escalate if the status quo is maintained, and if the Committee deemns it neces- sary, what plan of action wil help reduce problems among the youth in the Municipality. The Committee Is scheduled to report their findings and rec- ommendations to Council early in the new year. An exiremely important focus of the Committee is to solicit- opinions from as many members of the public as p ossible, so that the Comninittee can confidential- ly reflect on the diversity of attitudes, concerns, and Ideas thai are present in the community. At the beginning of Sepiember the Committee launched the Telephone Opinion Line on Youth Issues to solicit Input direct- ly- from the public. Newspaper articles were written and flyers were post- ed across the Municipaliiy. Unfortunaiely, thus far the response to the line has been considerably less than thie Commiltee had been expecting. In an atiempi to build a much needed dialogue with the public and tho encour- age people to calthe Opinion Iine, the Cornmiitee will be posing a different question about youth issues every few weeks. The public is inviied to cail the Opinion Line to give their point of viewon the question being asked. A summary of responses made to-the opin- ion Line, will be made avail- able to local newspapers. Members of the public can also receive a copy of this summary by leaving their request on the ,Opinion LUne. This week'Sý question is: Do you feel th@re is a Youth Problem in Clarington? Previous telepione respons- es suggest thiût citizens of Clarington have a wide range of views on tbis mat- ter. One aduit caller Indi- cated "I no longer feel at ease living ln town. . .up to now I had always considered tiisa safe place to live.. .but today I see so many kids hanging oui in front, of stores and uslng foui language... .ii jusi scares me.» Another caller suggests Clarington needs a program like the one offered by the Eastview Boys and Girls Club in Oshawa to "give the ids something to do insiead of hanging out on the streets." Some callers have expressed the opposite opin- ion. One caller said "Kids today are just the same as they have always been. No better and no-worse than when we were young. Let things be and everything xvill be ail right." Young people calling have also expressed a wide varieiy of opinions. One young per- son stated thai "the problem is therejust is nothing to do here.- The thing 1 want miosi is to get oui of this place." Another young person expressed, "Im really sick and tired of being told where I can hang and what I cari do... .ihey treat us like freaks even though we are doing nothlng wrong."- StilI another young per- son siaied "I really don'l know whai the big deal is. .. .this is a great place with pleniy to do." The Ad Hoc Committee to Assisi Youth is asklng more people to cali the Opinion Line (697-3132) to either simply state whether they agree or disagree that there is a youth problem in Clarington. Callers are also welcome to siate why they think ihere is or Is not a problem. Your response cari be anonymous. The public also has an opportunity to make more detailed commenis about youih issues. The Committee hopes that it is possible to create and, maintain an effective dialogue with the public. This will enable the Committee to reflect on a great deal of input from the residents of Clarington, (both youths and aduits) and be able to make confi- dent recommendations to Coundil.
