Orono bas been transformed to two f 1930's towns, New Bedford and North Bridge. Tbi if it gets picked up for the 1996-97 season, willb entirel y in this area, with Orono becoming the sitc Bedford, tbe principle town in the show. Tbe f1 and awnings that are adorning tbe town wouldý permanent fixtures. This opportunity is sometbing thati desperately needed. Not just for the actual ý because as anyone that bas tried to get in or ou downtown, the filming is causing a few problemn most imiportant thing that this bas done for Orc show what it could be like. We only need to look like Port Perry or Port Hope. These towr undertaken a project to revitalize their downtoxw and restore tbemn to their formner glory. This bas L influx of tourists and businesses to the area. C( tbe sanie happen to Orono? Many people were lining thie streets to watý movie-makers work their magic and retumn 1995C the past. Sure they were just plastic bricks and that were tacked on, but the effect it had downtown was amazing. People were commenting nice everythlng looked, and on how tbey wisbeý could stay like that. The wondefful tbmng is that it could. Oror not bave to undergo the dramatic rebuilding t] Hope bas been doing. Covering over the existing1 building could be done relatîvely cbeap. If al downtown merchants and resîdents were con restoring Orono to its former glory, we could see t] of tourist dollars that have beniefitted Port Perry Hope. Our empty storefronts could be filled with of antique and knick-knack sbops. Our rest. could be filled with bungry tourists. Our location' 35/115 would make it very easy for people to get could be a total revitalization of ouir community. It bas to start som-ewhere. Hopefully th( despite its disruption of the normnal way of tbii becomie a permianient fixture in our towni. Jus people could come to see where "Wind at My I filmed. WC CREDIT WtHERE CREDIT IS DUE Congatulations are in order to the Town Council, and in particular Ward 3 Regional Couneillor Ann Dresliînski for finally addressing the sewage problemi in Orono. This lhas been a major problem for years, and the Counicil has started oni the path to seeing the situation remedled. Ann Dreslinski miade a resolution before Council on Monday outlining the problems that Orono was experiencing and baving Clarington request that the Region of Durham look inito tlie possibility of lhaving sewers installed in the conmmnity. This is stilli a very long way fromn reality, but the Town hias undiceraen the first step. Tbanks must also go out to the residents of Orono that have been taking the time to attend the meetings that were being held at Mabel's Cafe oyer the last few weekil, Together. you and the Councillors must be commendeil for taking a necessary step forward in fixing this prob)lem. Let us hope that everyone continues to follow through on tbis issue and make sewers in Orono a reality. Donuts continued from page 1 Video that was built down the road from bis store. "'mjust a little guy trying to make a living. 1 have cut my salary, laid off employ- ees, cut mny sponsorship of local teams,"* said Mr. Wing. He asked tbat Council not allow the rezonîng to take place. and to "support the people that are here now and let th em grow." Ann Dreslinski pointed out to the two men that it was not in the Town's authority to say what busi- nesses could open up wbere. They are not allowed to dic- tate what tenants can locate at a location. They cannot tum down a rezoning appli- cation based on what buisi- ness will be using the struc- ture. Th-e local B.I.A. supported the rezoning of the land as an attemipt to ut iize a prime dowvntown location tbat bas been left emipty since tbe early 1L980's. However, they do not support a large com- pany coming in and driving a smnal! local business owner out of business. Many miembers of the B.I.A. were among the over 700 people that signed a petition ask- ing the Town to refuse the rezoning application. The rezoning application was recommended to be dent ed, flot becauise of the local outcry, but because the proposed structure did not conform- to tbe Town's devel- opment plan for the down- town core. To keep an bjs- toice feeling and improve the general aestbetics of the downitown, tbe Town requires that al structures be bufit witb a zero-lot line i.e. be buit rigbit against tbe sidewalk. Tbis eliminates the ability to us,-e tbe front of tbe building as parking. wbicbi is wbat Mr. Kurtz bad proposed to do. Mr. Kuirtz wanted to know "wby are we beinig treated differently than tbe plaza across the street?" He went on to fur- ther add, 'we just want to be treated fair and equitable witbi other pro jects that bave been allowed frontal park- ing." However, a miore recent comparison, tbe new My Apothecary building, wbicbi is situated on the other side of George Street fromn the land in question, was buiilt to the zero-lot line restriction placed by tbe Town.
