Orono, Ontario LOB 1MO Telephone'905-983-5301 Fax 905-983-5301 Herman Zwart ""SHOP AT HOME" The "powers that be" at Queens Park have seen fit to award a contract worth $20 million plus over ten years to an Anierican firm. This contract is for erecting signs on the Provincial Highways, pointing motorists to nearby tourist attractions.. Economic Development Minister Bill Saunderson said about the contract going to an American firm: 'Ontario competes abroad and 1 don't see why foreign companies can't compete to get Ontario business." Doesn't Mr. Saunderson know that we are ail for free trade as long as it's Canadians trading freely. A consulting firm was hired at the cost of $60,000 to pick the winnlng bid from the three Caniadian firms that made the short llst. At present our Premier is in Asia on an economie trade mission. Let's hope he is very clear about whose team he is on. In the meantime safety issues on our highways have to be addressed. Tourists can't be expected to b e ogling our new slgns while dodging run away truck tires. TO SUE OR NOT TO SUE .In the process of completing- the transaction of the purchase of this newspaper, 1 find out I have to have a special liabllity insurance. 'Why", 1 asked. (Maybe I'm a bit nalve, but 1 neyer thought of this.) "Just in case you get. sued about somethlng that was said in the paper" was the answer. Wow! Rlght away 1 thought about -the recent case of former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney versus the Canadian Government. How easy it is to think someone quilty of, somethlng before proven qullty.. Mulroney obviously wanted to clear his namle. Would thegovernment have worked as quickly and researched as deep as they did, with a libel suit? Cl'he goverriment neyer likes to be wrong) 1 don't think 80. The $50 million attached certainly made everyone jump., Why ail this sulng for money.- Have we ail become such worshlppers of money, that when we have been wronged, the only thlng that will compensate is money? Is a simple "'Sorry, I was wrong" or apology not good enough unless there is money attached to it? The fact is that action is taken far more serlously and quicker when there is money involved. STo Mulroney's credit, he settled out of court for a lot less, to cover his expenses, after the government publicly apologlzed.1 We often see that to accomplish certain goals we have to go through the process of suing. Suing has become qulte a common occurrence in the United States, and you hear more and more of tIbis In Canada. Sulng for money is not the right answer. Lets not fool ourselves., everyone ends up paylng for this, through their insurance premiums one way or another. Instead, we should be suing for the truth (which can be just as painfril). Money already plays too powerful a rol In soclety. Lets ail be 100% sure before we accuse, lest anyone gets hurt, and when we are wrong. be ma.n enough to say so, without waiting to see if the 'other side' is going to sue for money. Don't let money be the -reas-on for being either right or wrong but'lnstead use decency and respect for our I feflow hunian bding. whether we Ilike hlm or not. I Unfortunately we do have to have this insurance for the fact that some people do value the money more than recelvlng an apok&, urilike Mulroney who used It as a tool to prove a point. The sale was announiced in Detroit by Jack Long who was niamed CEO of IMSG this week. Long has also been the ,promnoter of the Canadian Grand Prix Formula One in Montreal and the U.S. Grand Prix. Mosport, which was built on a 850 acre site north of Bowmanville is Canada's only permanent road racing circuit. The race track was opened in 1961 by a group of road racing enthuslasts, and has been oper-ated, slnoe the late 60's by Toronto attorney Bemie Kamin, and businessman Harvey Hudes, who dled last year. Kamin will stay inivolved. in the track as president and CEO of Mosport Concert Productions, which staged the huge, but money losing, Eden Fest rock concert last sumnier. Once the deal has been coin- pleted, additions and improve- ments will be made at Mosport's track. A new motor cycle event has been added 10 the Mosport schedule for 1997.
