Aconnection with Turkey Pict the st Three weeks ago the stu- dents of Mrs. Andrews Grade 9 geography class got a smal package in the mail. Enclôsed in the package was 36 letters from children in -Ankara, Turkey who have written to our class to find out informa- tion about our country, our school, and more about each individual student. Along with the letters, there was a picture of each student and a picture of a number of the students playng football (soc- cer) ti their school yard. The students from Ankara are 2 years younger than most of us but that didn't change a thing; xwè were Just hon'ored to have beeni chosen by the Turkish students to, lie their penpals. Jessica Walters, one of the students in our class, was the reason the programn the bail got rolling. Her broth- er, Jeff Walters, a former Clarke High School student, is teachîng ti Turkey and contacted Mrs. Andrews via the Internet. Our class didn't have to wait long before the letters arrived and we were ail excited to receive them. We began our replies immediate- ly, teimg these students from another part of the world al about life in Clarington. We had our pictures taken and include these wÀith our pack- age sent off recently. We are hopeful that we'll receive a reply before the semester ends. M.J. Hobbs Senior Public first ever 3Oth reunfion I hopped out of the car, not knowing what to expect. I was anxious to see the school and to meet familiar faces. Was my locker still the same colour? Was homeroom still on second floor? Watt a minute, wasn't my name put on that trophy? 1 wonder if Mr. Webster stili teaches here? Would the sweetest class- mate of all be inside those four wails today finally ready to see the real1 me despite my acrie, uncombed stiff hair, occasionally greasy nose and stone-silence nature'? You know, everybody knows 'the type'. Those classmates who you had the nerve to walk near in a feat ofbravery while your palms were sweaty and your hormones registered a teh on the rictor scale. 1 smiled to myseif and walked with a sacerdotal air along the concrete sidewalk. ' Boy that bell could use a paint job, 1 thought. See what happens when I leave the place;:it lterally falîs apart', 1 thought. (Obviously my ego was giving me a confidence boost). Questions and curiousity raced through my mmlid in fond anticipation of meeting with my past and the past of others who were attending thle planninf- meeting- of the MdJ. Hobbs Senior Public School First Ever 3th Reunion. 1 entered the front doors, "Okay, who moved the office without telling me',. 1 thoughit. I felt like a tourist ini a familiar yet foreigri land so 1 followed the sigris to the "New & Improved"* Office, signed-in an-d proceeded to ,what 1 knew to be the Health and Guidance teacher's room:- HIarvey Webster's centre of operations. It was strategical- ly located right next to the "Principa's Office" in case the Principal needed some real "Health & Guidance" fromn our Square Dancing instruc- tor, memorable teacher and Coach. You remember, the gentle- man who çVached us, don't you? He advised us and counselled us and yes, hie even taught us to square dance. Watt a minute, 1 won- der if square-dancing was in the Board guidelines for miy education? Oh well. Then 1 saw them, there they were, the aluni, staff and students; faces beaming with joy (the acne had cleared) and then, slowly but surely, the stories began. At 1first we chuckled, afler ail not ail of us knew the other peo- ple there. When we heard and Bob Witheridge. somebody's testimonial about their "incident at Hobbs" we tapped our own memories and sure enough we recaifled wiho we were while at Hobbs. 'Am 1 the same, today', 1 thought. The testimonials reminded us and soon enough we giggled, theri laughied, then roared and all the while we wrote down the 5 W's of airrging a reunion. We were engaged ti finding out who we were and who we are. We ai Hobbs today invite you to come back for a long- weekend of mem ories. Ar e you up for it? Ready to joumney to the past? Get the ,rapevine ads running and we'll see you ther-ewith year- book & Hobbs mem-orabilia. Who knlows you might even rediscover your best friend, your favourite teacher and your old crush: recess & lunch hour.
