Editor Marc, Zwart How Much Is Too Much? by Roy Forrester Telephone sexyice keeps growing and growlng in its scope of service. It's a far cry from the day you had to self-generate the energy ta let central know you wanted to give a number for a phone cail. You have to be a lit- fie an the 'old-side' to remember those days. This came ta mind a couple of nights ago when flot only did 1 get a cail ta leave Bell for another telephane service ta 'save a bundie' but also received a cail from Bell itself. This lsn't the first cail from Bell ta lavish us with additlonal features of telephone service. The llst of new services just keeps expanding and it is naw beyond the point of my knawledge as ta what is available and actually I don't want ta know. Anyway 1 was gettig the hard sel. I wasn't about ta be a taker and althaugh I hate ta admit it most of the time I dldnt know what they were talking about. "The best you can do for me is leave me alone and mark on my file in red -They're happy with what they have!'" I could also say the same thing about television. Sixteen new statians with more garbage ta wade thraugh ta try and get ta something worthwhile watch- ing. By the time yau find the 'worthwhfle' the evening is over. At coffee Manday marning it was stated that the new Enviromnmental station was showing progranis that has been a rerun an the Discovery channel over the past years. It's ail expensive and just wait until they penetrate the airways with the new digital technology that will increase'TV. capaclty at least slx-fold. The liaurs of work ta pay for the service will flot leave time ta watch the tube, let~ alone answer the phone. LETTER TO THE EDITOR Claringtcrn Coundil says NO (Reqiiired: 2/3rds vote ta reconsider) Voted ini favour: Mayor Diane Harnre, Carson Elliott, David Scott, Pat Pingle Voted agalnst: Ann Dreslinski, Larry Hanna, Mary Novak Residents, inceluding aur- selves who live next door ta the CNR underpass an Mill Street South were unaware of a decision made over one year ago when the Kaitlin develop- er had Phase 1 of bis subdi- vision approved. There is an agreement lui place called "Alternative B" whilh the Coundil approved against the advice of their own Public Works department ta improve Toronto Street as the main entrance ta the new subdivi- sion, and ta create havoc with the MiII Street underpass by putting ;ý coricrete bairder ta protect pedestrians and then to create ane-way traffic an the other half of the under- pass managed by signal lights. The pleas of speakers, and 332 signatures in support of "Alternative A" which is slm- ply to widen the Mill Street underpass appropriately, again fell on deaf ears. The was ta prohibit trucks fîrom traveling down Mill Street. She missed the point entirelyi 1 amn sure Newcastle Salvagse will be happy ta hear this and Wainut Valley Farms on Lakeshore Road Who deliver the produce from their fresh market garden each day (which information was clear- ly presented by the delega- tion). Ontario LlB Id2 Lighting improvements not to include Peters Pike walkway Counicil approved the expenditure of $188,900 for street ighting improvemnents. Ron Robinson Limnited will be paid $91,900 ta instali decorative lighiting ta the West Main Central Area and on Green Rd. in Bowmnanvi' lie. Stagemnaster Cres. in Courtice will receive regular street ighting. Light.ing the walkway between Peters Pike and Mill Lane, Orono, was ariginally ta be included in these light- ing improvemnents. However, because the tender price was twice as high as the amnounit budgeted, that project wiIl now be included in the 1998 Works Departmient budget. Works Department budgeted $1 0,000 for the contract, but the actual tender camne in at $2 1,900. ILift weilghts, lift your spirits! This issue was nat before Councîl last Tuesday night, but what was before Council was the developer setting the stage for this possibility. The By-Law suppartLing the Proposed Plan of Subdivision requested a 250 roam hotel! What could possibly be the drawing card ta fill a 250 room hatel if not a casiýno? The developer was asked point biank three tines by Councîllor David Scott at the meeting if there were plans now or in the future for a casino. He danced. . .and did not say' "No". We asked Council flot ta consider the developer's pos- sibilities (or suggestions as ta why 250 rooms), but lndeed ta limit the developer's possi- bilities to what made sense for the ambiance of Newcastle. With,,these points very clearly made, the delegation. of Newcastle residents at the meeting were absalutely floored when the motion was made and passeci without any discussion at ail regarding the requested By-Law amend- ment. It was a clear disregard for the delegation and 340 signatures obtai ned on the petition lu support of them! SAY YES TO SAFETY Newcastle says YES
