____ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___Ororo Week ..,W....a..M.c.4.198 1 Not necessary to feed deer this winter The Peterboroughi District Office of the Ministry of Natural Resources reminds people that it is flot necessary to feed the local deer popula- tion this winter, due to mild weather and other factors. "We are fortunate in Peterborough District to have had a mild wnter this year, compared to immediately north of us on the Precambrian Shield,» said Tom Cumby, Fish and Wildlife Technical Specialist with MNR 'Thfe large amount of agricultural land in our area provides deer with excel- lent forage, along wth their natural foods, to bufld up fat reserves for wlnter." The local deer population is capable of handling most winters in Peterborough dis- trict on its own and feeding them is flot recommended for the followlng reasons: e if near roads and high- ways, deer feeding sites can increase the possibillty of vehicle collisions; e concentration of deer around artificlal feeders sometimes serves to attract predators - and poachers: . when deer numbers increase too rapidly, the nat- ural habitat is. unable to sup- port em, resulting In poor reproduction, smaller fawns, and, ultimately, higher win- ter mortality rates; - improper feed can result in digestive diseases. "The worst possible sce- nario is that deer become dependent on artificial feed. The result is an increase in their metabolic rate, and the energy demand of increased metabolism means more food is required. When the wlnter feeding is stopped, death cars result si mply from stress to the body," said Mr. Cumby. 'There is a cycle to the feeding needs and habits of de er, quite unlike our own. Deer are designed t o store fat and successfully process that 'fat in the winter months. In an area like MNRs Peterborough District, where natural feed Is plentifuil, supplemental feed- lng can- sometimes do more harm than good."
