Orano Weekly Uimes, Wedjnesdaýy, March 4,1998 - 7 Public reception for Kaiti and Ada.m Colvîlle FARM NEWS Breeigsrtgs for 4 your beef herd The entire Colville clan was on hand ai Kaiti and Adam's well attended public reception Sunday afternoon. Pictured above left ta right are: Grandpa Colville, Grandma Henderson, mother Ruthe, Kaiti, sister Melissa, brother Kyle, Adam, and father Brian Colville. The toast of Orono, figure skaters Adam and Kaiti Colville-were the guests of honour at an open house Sunday afternoon 'at Orono Town Hall as part of the 5th Anniversary celebrations of the Orono Figure Skating Club and the Centennial celebrations of Orono Town Hall. The young skaters were uverwhelmed with the response of the commun ity when axer 150 family, friends and well- wishers came out ta, conigratu- laie them on their tremendous skating achievements at the Canadian National Figure Skating Championship this past January. Visitors were treated ta displays of photographs, medallions, and costumes, complete with taped video recordings of their perfor- mances. There was even' a memory book of early photos and mamenios up ta the mast recent competitions carefully compiled by their father for guests ta look ai. The biggest new s of the afternoon was the upcoming retirement front pairs skating for the brother and sister. After Adam's mosi recent fifth place finish at the national champi- onships, caombined wiih being named ta Canada's National Junior Team, hie was advised by his coaches ta give up the pairs skating and focus on his singles eveni. The aither surprise of the afternoon was seeing young Kaiti sporiing a pair crutches. Apparently, since lasi Novem- ber, she has been skating wiih a broken bone in hier lefi foot-- hier landing foot, and dociors only jusi recently found it was broken! Now that Adam is pursuing the junior men's singles title, and hie and his sister are bid- ding farewell ta pairs, don't count fair Kaiti oui. She's a sîrong singles skater in her own right and as soon as she gets a dlean bill of health from the doctors--she'll continue train- ing here in Orono and in Barrie pursuing her junior competi- tive. Adam leaves April 5th for his firsi international competi- ion in Jesenice, Slovenia (near the Austrian border) fromn April 6 ta 13. He'll fly ta Frankfurt, Germiany, then ta Ljubliana, Slovenia and finally travel by bus to Jesen1ice. It'll be a week of firsis far Adamn! Not only is it his firsi international campetition, but is his firsi flight and firsi trip overseas! In preparation for the Jesenice campetition, Adam has been spending a great deal of time altitude training. He's, made a couple of chianges ta his program adding itwa more j umps for difficulty--a triple axel and triple-toe iriple-toe combination. At this time bath Adam and Kaiti would like ta thank everyone for their besi wishes and continued support over the years. They are always quick ta point oui the contributions of 50 many other people. You'll still have a few chances ta see Adam and Kaiti pairs skate before the season ends. Adam will be perfarming ai the Millbrook Figure Skating Carnival nexi Saturday. Following that, hie and Kaiti (if her foot is improvecd) will be skating ai the Newcastle ihen Bowmanville 'Carnivals. Finally, the Orono Figure Skating , Club's 50th Anniversary Carnival entitled "The Golden Review" will fea- ture the Colville's in their lasi pairs performance and that takes place on April 4th. On a, final note, competing ai the national level is a tremendous financial undertak- ing. A special bank account has been set up in the Orono CIBC ta help raise funds for Adam as he continues on his journey up the figure skating ladder. The manies will go ta the Canadian Figure Skating Association then redirecled back la Adamn in the form af a bursary so as ta retain his amateur status. by Joanne Handley, Beef Specialist, OMAFRA Clear targets are required when cbooslng wbat beef breeds you plan ta use in a crossbreeding program. Selection at the caw-calf level has focused on productivity per cow witb emphasis an reproductive and growth traits for the last 20-30 years. The importance of hittlng the market target bas resulted in the emphasis shiùfting toward evaluation and selection of carcass characteristics. The first important step is ta ensure your caw herd match- es your enviranment and resources and then determine how ta bit your market tar- gels through breed and sire selection. The breed combination of 50% British and 50% Continental optimizes trade- offs and fits many environ- ments. A rotational cross- breeding system or a composite breed will work in the situation where the same breed combinationsoptimize cow maternai performance and meet the optimum tar- gets for carcass traints. In sit- uations wbere the same breed combinations do not optimize bath maternai performance and targets for carcass traits, terminal sire systems (al calves marketed, replace- ments purchased) should be considered because tbey allow the genetics of the end product ta be different from the genetics of the cow herd. Optimum targets for car- cass traits are relatively clear for larger markets with emphasis placed an quality and yield. Two major markets with well d efined -targets have been ldentified in the Ontario beef industry through research ai the University of Guelph. The markets include beef destined for retail trade with single A marbling and a 750 pound carcass and beef destined for the restaurant trade witb AAA marbling and a 700 pound carcass. Addltionai niche markets may bave very different targets but wlll be easy to define. Researchers at the University of Guelph bave cal- culated economic indexes ta match the market targets identified in their research. Beef Improvement Ontario bas implemented the eco- nomlc in dexes (Beef Builder and Prime Plus) in the bull test program ta ldentiIy bulis that will praduce prageny ta meet those market targets. Bulls tbat meet your breed criteria can then be identified by economic values for the apprapriate market with fur- ther culling based on confor- mation and individual traits important ta your herd (iLe. birtb weight, calving ease etc.).
