Orono skaters compete out-of-town Over the past two months the above skaters represented the Orono Figure Skating Club at the following competitions: Minden Meet to Skate. Jan. 31 - Feb.1/98. Sarah Beranger placed first. Oshawa Invitational, Feb. 14, Jillian Lemieux placed 2nd in the Ladies Novice Competitive. Also competing were Kera Collier, Michelle Moffat, Jennifer Lamont, Andrea Lamont, Sara Beranger and Stefannie Virag. E.O.S.I.C. Kingston, Feb 20-22. Mat Brock competed in the finals. Sara Beranger placed lst in flight, 2nd in semi final and 4th in final. Sarah is the "alter- nate" for the "All Ontario" competition. Also competing were Kera Collier, Brittany Robinson, Jennifer Lamont, Katie O'Neill (absent from photo), Jenn Haynes Masters and Michelle Moffat who placed 6th in flight and pro- ceeded to the semi finals. Melanie Allin placed 6th in the artistic category, fourth in the flight free skate and 7th in the final. The Orono figure Skating Club was well represented at the recent Eastern Ontario Section Inter-club Competition. This champi- onship is the stepping stone to the All Ontario competition to be held on March 14 and 15 in Gravenhurst. Congratulations to all skaters for their fine per- formances. Apple Blossom Shop score Pictured above is the National Power Skating Major Tyke's hard-working, versatile winger/defenseman Jeffery Mulder. 15 goals in 3 games Finding themselves with time on their hands till playoffs start, the Apple Blossom Shop novices lined up a number exhibition games. Oshawa Kingsview played host to Orono February 28. The game consisted of two 20- minute periods with Orono coming out on top--Troy Webster earning a 3-1 win. First period action saw Kingsview take the lead. Then Apple Blossom responded with two goals--Paul Bridger netted the first unassisted and Heather Maitland bagged the second on a pass from Lucas Leech. Devon Robinson scored Orono's third goal of the game in the second unassisted. Orono over Bewdley Apple Blossom Shop played host to Bewdley in game two of exhibition play defeating them handily 6-1. Bewdley took an early first period lead putting only one past Troy Webster. But it was- n't until the third period that the novices were able to solve the Bewdley goalie. And that they did with six straight goals! Paul Bridger popped in 4 goals assisted by Devon Robinson. Andrew Kirkbride netted one with a pass up from Mike Hicks. Mike Hicks poked in the sixth with Robinson assist- ing. Orono takes on Newcastle Exhibition game number three took place March 3 in Newcastle with Apple Blossom winning another 6-1 decision Orono put three past the Newcastle netminder in the first period. Ben McKelvie scored the first on a pass from Robyn Henderson to Paul Bridger. Bridger netted the next with a pass from Andrew Kirkbride to Mike Hicks. Newcastle managed to pot their only goal in the second spoiling Orono's shutout bid. Both netminders kicked out a barrage of shots until Orono kicked into high gear with three more goals. Ben McKelvie slammed in the first from Daniel Hodgson to Jessie Rice for the assist. Lucas Leech picked up the next point assisted by Scott Henderson. The last goal was tipped in by Gregg Howe passed up from Heather Maitland to Lucas Leech. Troy Webster was stel- lar in net! Orono Skaters compete in Oshawa. Front row: Megan Ernst. Back row: Breanne Collier, Brittany McDonnell and Kirstin Blaker all competed and placed in the Unicom Fair recently held in Oshawa. Accessible Design atoms close out busy schedule The Orono Accessible Design atoms were mighty busy playing five games of hockey in the past couple of weeks with a 2-2-1 record to show for it. Tie Newcastle 1-1 Back on February 26 in Newcastle the atoms played to a 1-all tie. Newcastle scored first in the late in the second. Orono applying pressure late in the third, were rewarded with a goal by Paul Richter with 53 seconds left in the game. Downed by Oshawa The following night, Orono played host to Oshawa in a fiery, penalty filled affair. Orono banged in the first goal at 9:10 of the second as doug Garlick scored from Kyle Allin. That was all Orono would get as Oshawa went on to score 4 straight to win 4-1. Oshawa wins again Accessible Design played Oshawa again March 1. And, again it was a match filled with penalties--over 20. Oshawa jumped to a 4-0 lead before Orono's Steve Burt scored from Chris Moffat. Oshawa scored twice making it 6-1 until Moffat scored with Brian Pisani earning the assist. That was all for Orono as they went down to defeat 7-2 once again to Oshawa. Designers over Caygers Orono was in Bobcaygeon to play a round-robin game. Bobcaygeon opened the scoring but Orono responded as Kyle Allin potted one from Paul Richter. The Caygers put up two more goals in the first but the 'designers' kept within one as Doug Garlick scored from Chris Moffat and Steve Hicks. Orono notched another in the second as Ryan Campney scored from Garlick and Moffat. The Orono crew con- nected once again as this time Moffat found the mark from Garlic and Richter. Orono led 4-3 until late in the third as Garlick ended a four-point night setting up Ryan Campney for a goal and a 5-3 win. Orono over Sunderland The 'designers' ended their five game run on March 6 at home against Sunderland. Both teams were evenly matched and were scoreless after one period. Orono got two in the second the first from Kyle Cox assist- ed by Kyle Allin and Steve Burt. The other was scored by Chris Moffat from Mike Fuller and Kyle Allin. Orono kept up the pressure and got another as Kyle Allin scored assisted by Kyle Cox and Evan Moore. Sunderland pulled within one but it looked like Orono had put it away with their fourth goal. Kyle Allin got it from Ryan Campney. But Sunder-land again pulled within one and were coming on strong. But, the game had run past the cur- few and was called with 51 seconds left on the clock. Orono wins a strange one 4-3!
