10 - Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday. May 13. 1998 Co-operative education and health care There are many co-opera- tive education students who exhibit traits deemed essen- tial for success in the health care field. They are kind, car- ing and compassionate and have a need to help other people. The 1997-98 school year has seen as number of qualified young people involved in the Clarke High School co-op programme working in hospitals, nurs- ing homes and clinics. Chandra Amodeo will, by June, have completed two full semesters at Marnwood Lifecare Centre in Bowmanville in the Activities Department there. Wendy Loback, Chandra's supervi- sor there, believes that Chandra has a natural abili- ty which will enable ber to be successful in the health care field. Crystal Simpson has also worked in the Activities Department at Strathaven Lifecare Centre. Crystal says she loved every minute of it there and plans to continue her studies in this area at community college. Kelly Powell was Crystal's supervisor at Strathaven. Lacey Piels has also been involved in the Activities Department in yet another nursing home, Versacare in Newcastle. Laceybas learned a lot about working in a facil- ity such as Versacare. Sue Galley has been her supervi- sor. Subscribe to the Orono Weekly Times Memorial Hospital -- Bowmanville has also provid- ed some excellent opportuni- ties for our students. Mistie Ovenden has rotated through several areas of the hospital including diagnostic Imaging and rehabilitation services. Mistie has had a variety of supervisors there, all of whom have provided experi- ences second to none. Stephanie Spencer has also rotated tbrough a num- ber of areas in the hospital working with the nurses on staff there. She has worked in continuing care, same-day surgery, mnedical, and mater- nity, to name a few. Stephanle plans to begin a nursing programme at com- munity college in the fall. Pam Towier is currently with Vicky Adams in Volunteer Services; Vicky also worked with Sommer Bedard first semester. RECYCLE The scope of experiences for the students is wide in this area as well as the stu- dents work on the computer, answer telephones, conduct surveys and collate results, staff "Perk Central" or what- ever other tasks are required. Students must be flexible and willing to try lots of things in Volunteer Services; both of these young women have met the challenge and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of their placement. Alecia Staples is presently at Grant Physiotherapy Clinic ln Bowmanville. As Alecia hpes to some day work with injured athletes, this place- ment offers an excellent range of experiences for her. As with all co-op students, Alecia performs the role of assistant, not that of physio- therapist. However, she has learned a great deal this semester, thanks to owner Telma Grant and supervisor Sherry Farrell. We should have no fears for the future of health care with all these talented young people preparing to further their studies in the field. Thank you to all employers who are providing such a broad range of experiences for our students!. Parkwood Plant & Yard Sale The public is invited to a spring benefit event - the Parkwood Plant & Yard Sale - Friday, May 29 and Saturday, May 30, 1998.
