'The incident at Millbrook Correctional Centre Wednesday evenlng could have been much more seri- ous had il happened at one of the proposed new "mega- jails", said Leah Casselman, President of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union. More than 60 inmates occupied the exercise yard in a tense standoff that lasted through the night. It began when a dispute between two inmates escalated to a full- scale brawl. "What saved the situation at Millbrook was the presence of trained staff -- in adequate numbers -- supported by trained institutional, staff brouglit in from other provin- cial correctional facilities," said Casselmani, whose union represents the.correctional officers. "Just imagine whatwould have happened if this were a mega-jail -- and that's what the government plans for the Peterborough area. You would have four times as many inmates, supervised by video cameras instead of peo- pie. "When's the last lime you saw a videa camera do any effective negotiations in an emergency?" There will be an inquiry into the disruption. OPSEU has demanded involvement in that investigation and we will be included. That's the kind of institutional and public accountabllity you get wlth a publicly-run operation, Casselman said. "In a private, non-union mega-jail, front line staff wouild neyer have effective representation at an inquiry. They could easily be scape- goats for structural problems inherent inthe system. It's just no way to run an effective program." Skate -board ramp goes Up in smoke Police and Pire Crews soon put an end to an early morning vandalism rampage at the Orono Park. At 4:06 police received a caîl from a Main St. resident who reported a disturbance and a fire at the park. Pire crews extin- guished the bla7ing skate-board ramp and the five pic-nic tables that were pile on top of il. The snack shop was broken into, and sustained minor damage. Vandals tried to set the booth on fire, but in the process they broke water pipes causing the fire to extinguish itself.
