As anyone in softball knows, Darren Zack's reputa- tion precedes him, having in the recent past struck out 150 batters in a weekend tourna- ment. The Jaguars will have to be on top of their game against the formidable Smokers in the opener. The Smokers own an impressive 39-5 record at pre- sent! Besides Zack and Martin, there are other Canadian imports playing for the Smokers including outfielder Rob Gray. Gray played his junior ball with the Oshawa BB's. Although they finally emerged 15-14 victors, the diesel girls only just pulled it off in their last at-bat in the bottom of the seventh. MacDonald Plumbing took an early 3-run first inning lead blanking the Orono girls. It wasn't until the fourth inning ihat Orono finally went ahead 10-9 but it was. short- lived as MacDonald's tied the game in the fifth regaining the lead in the sixth 14-12. Orono chucker, Katie O'Neill struck out the side in the seventh using only ten pitches. A good eye at the plate and a timely hit was all the girls needed to put the game away in their last at-bat. Tina Cumby who reached base via a walk, proceeded to steal second then third, scoring on a ground out by Erin MacDonald. Vanessa Maynard also walked to reach base and like MacDonald stole second and third. Maynard scored her fourth run of the game on a tight play at the plate following a Jillian Bugden slow roller to tie the game at 14. After Bugden stole second, Kim Kindratuik got full measure of her new bat by driving a hard shot up the mid- de which was snagged by the pitcher. An errant throw hand- cuffed the first-baseman allow- ing Bugden to score from sec- ond giving Orono the come- from-behind win. Diesel highlights Laura Williamson got her first taste of play behind the plate catching two innings and Becky Reid--back from holi- days covered the hot corner at third most of the game. Jill Bugden made two inspi- rational tags at the plate snuff- ing out a couple of scoring threats. One of which was scored a 7-6-2 put-out. Carley McColl in left, fielding a ball hit over her head, fired a strike to relay Katie O'Neill at short- stop who in turn made a perfect throw to Bugden behind the plate for the put-out. The plumbers also tried to steal home in the fourth on an over- throw in the Orono infield, but was gunned down at the plate for the second put-out by Bugden. Steve's Diesel peewees are on the road this week taking on Grayon Industries. Their next home game is Wednesday, July 22nd versus Tak Masters. Eagles double Ajax out of a game or... Aax hurler seemgdoubes Ajax hurler, Shane Moore probably thought he was on his way to recording another win when Saturday's game in Kendal entered the bottom of the eighth inning-- his team sit- ting comfortably with a 4-1 lead. Having struck out 9 and walked two, Moore threw a pretty good game until the Eagles decided to throw down the gauntlet letting loose a bar- rage of hits knocking Moore all over the place erstwhile scoring four runs and taking the lead. The Eagles first run came compliments of junior call-up, Brian Smith who homered to left-centre in the seventh That was the beginning of Moore's demise. He didn't fool anyone after that as the Eagles began their bit parade. In the bottom half of the eighth, Jason Carroll started the onslaught with a double followed by a Tim Furness double delivering Carroll home safely. Next batter Brad Robinson, grounded out-- but not before picking up an RBI scoring Furness from sec- ond. Another junior, Dave Trew slashed a double which in turn was followed by a John Robinson double scoring Trew to tie the game at 4. At this point, speedster Tyler Douglas entered the game to pinch run for Robinson. The strategy worked. Kendal hitter Troy Foster came to the plate sin- gling a Shane Moore offering-- scoring Douglas from second for the game-winning RBI! Winning pitcher was Mike Robinson throwing 8-1/3 innings, walking one, striking out two and giving up 4 earned runs on thirteen hits. The save went to Jason Carroll who pitched 2/3 of an inning striking out one. Shane Moore was tagged with the loss giving up five earned runs on nine hits, two walks and nine strike-outs. Kendal over Port Hope The Eagles continued their hitting parade Sunday afternoon defeating the visiting Port Hope team 10-7.
