Bethesda house growing by Ieaps and bounds Since the shelter for abused women and their chil- dren opened in February, 1995, hundreds have found safety there. Now two new programs, both slated to begmn this month will allow Bethesda House to further serve the needs of local women and chifldren. The flrst new venture is a thrift store named Second Chances. It will be located at 103 King St. E. next to the Royal Canadian Legion. The local community has always been so generous with donat- ing -gently used clothing to Bethesda bouse that the shelter often lacked the space to store it ail. Clothing dona- tions will continue to be made available to residents of the shelter, but no w the extra wll be sold at Second Chances to raise more funds for the shel- ter to continue its vital work. Any donations of gently used clothes may be dropped off at Frank's Real Estate, 234 King Street East in Bowmanville. The second venture is the Wilmagale Resouirce Centre which ýwill officially open on Friday, October 23 between 1 and 4 p.m. at 150 Port Darlington Road in Bowmanville. The celebration will be marked with a ribbon cutting ceremony, music and refreshments. The resource centre will be a supportive, informative and social drop-ln centre where local women, and children cari go to learn, grow, think, feel supported and work on the issues in their lives. Services will include: moins and tot pro- gram, book and video lending library, information resources and referrals, supportive staff, workshops. What is it? The answer is carbon monoxide. In the past couple of ye ars there has been a number of news reports about tragedies caused by this poisonous gas. Despite this fact, mnany people stili know veiy littie about cabnmonoxide. "hle,- almost every homeowner has' fire alarms and extinguishers in -their homes, few think about purchasing a carbon monoidedetector. The good- news is many hardware and departmnent stores are now aggressively advertising the detectors for reasonable prices. One Canadian insurance coin- pany is even running .a special promotion to sel the detectors, to its clients for a reduced price. "Promoting safety in our local communities is an important initiative at The Co-operators which is why we decided to offer carbon monoxide detctIors to our clients at a price significantly' lower than what they'd buy themn for in regular retail stores," sadRob Martin, with The Co-operators. "We believe if we make it convenient and affordable for our clients to buy the detectors - they wiILl Effective immediately, alI of our offices are selling the detectors until the -end of the year- or until quanitities last. The most common. reason people don't buy detectors is because they're not sure why they would need one. What they don't realize is that although small amounts of gas won't hurt themn and will exit the home through normal ventilation, a large build-up can make them sick or even kilI. The best way to detect carbon monoxide is to instaîl a carbon mono- xide detector. Preventing gas 'build-up can -be accomplished though basic home main- tenance such as: -keeping your chimney clear -making sure your furnace annual walk-a7thon willbe held in Bowrnanville. Unfortunately, unless you instail a carbon monoxide detector, you might neyer know if carbon mnonoxide i s in the air despite- effiicient home -ma in- tenance. But if you are being poisoned by the gas some physical symptoms may occur such as headaches, a tight fore- head, dizziness and nausea, loss of muscular control and wateny or smarting eyes. 0f course these conditions cani be symp- toms of another illness but the best way to find out is to get some fresh air by openfing wi"ndows or doors or by stepping outside. If carbon monoxide is the cause of your sickness, the symptoms should clear up. The bottom line is carbon monoxide poisoning can be prevented simply by installing a carbon mono- xide detector.
