For pri- ove apoivnmeat t-800-267-2732, 514-684-3528. by: Clifford Francis Helping my friend Tracey Osmond clear a hiking/biking trail la few weeks ago, 1 was reminded of a hike 1 took years ago. A girl 1 was dating at the time thought hiking would be better for my health than smok- ing and drinking large quanti- ties of whisky., So one Saturday, four'of us set out on a hiking trip north of Lindsay. Within minutes 1 had fallen s everal hundred yards behind. The further we hiked, the more I fell off the pace. A mile up the trail my girl friend ran back and urged me to walk faster. 1 told her to go on. ahead, and 1 would catch up at lunch tinie. I neyer saw her again tili night- faîl. As soon as she was out of sight, 1 sat down and had a cig- arette. This was turning out to be the hike from hell. I wasn't far into my cigarette when 1 realized 1 was sitting in sting- ing netties. When they touch you, you instantly start sting- ing and become itchy. When 1 jumped up, I lost my lighter. Weil, 1 can't hike without smoking, so 1 started back to the car. 1A short distance down the trail 1 heard a noise in the woods. 1 couldn't believe what 1 saw! A big brown bear run- ning after me on ail fours. 1 was frightened badly and ran down the trail, over Iogs, stumps, through a creek, over a hill and fell into a ravine. 1 must have ran five hundred yards. 1 couldn't breath. 1 was frightened and exhausted. My one cowboy boot and my hat were lost. In -ail the fright, I had wet my pants, and the crotch ripped out whenI fell down. When 1 finally dared to look up, the brown bear was wagging his tail at me. It was an Irish Setter. 1 sat up and dis- covered 1 was sitting i a poi- son ivy patch.' 1.While looking for my lost boot and hat, 1 stepped on a nest of bees and was stung sev- eral times on my head, and where 1 had ripped my pants. I did find my hat, but not the boot, so I threw the other one away as my feet were wet anyway from running through- the creek. After that I walked ve ry carefully down the trail to the car. Thank goodness I had a large bottle of medicine in the car. Needless to say, that was the last hiking trip I went on, and the last time 1 dated that girl. She was too fit for me.
