This week it is a short story about one of our tiniest birds measuning no more than tbree and a haif inches in length. This compares with the lengtb of a Ruby-Throated Humming- bird that measures from tbree to tbree and thr ee quarter Inches in length. Not likely I would have written about the Golden- Crowned Kinglet if it hadn't been that on two occasions during the week I had been shown a dead specimen of this tlny creature along with the question - "ýwbat bird is this?" Further the twoý specimen were quite remote from one another. Friday, Frank McMullen, a former Clarke/ Newcastle residents and, now of Toronto walked up the drive carrying a plastic shopping bag. I can't find this bird in the book", sald Frank, "what is It was a maie Golden Crowned Kinglet wblch no doubt had smashed into a window bringing its life to an end. The folowing day it was Billy Wrght of Lake On The Mountain that beld another dead Golden Crowned Kinglet that had been picked up below a big window in the house. It was a female which was, not going to spend the wlnter in warrner, climates. In the Kinglet family there are Ruby Crowned and Golden Crowned with the former being perbaps a haif inch greater in lengtb. The Golden Crowned Kinglet wllIl arrive In the spring beginning in early April to early May. In late September into October the bird returns soutb. 1It Is in the faîl that the movement in migration is more noticeable than in the splng. Neither specie is a cornmonsummer resident in southern Ontario preferring to. travel fartber nortb to nest - the Boreal forest zone. They do reside in mature spruce forests where their small nests are well hidden in the twigs from the mid- section to higb up in the tree. On occasions you are lucky to run into a fal movement of this tiny bird - s0 tiny it is reported that it can get entrapped in the bur of the Burdock. It's flot, always an easy life belng the tiniest of birds. I did catch a sighting of four Swainson Tbrush in migration in the back lot along witb a small flock of Cedar Waxwings. A Meadowlark.was another noticeable. Rather a late hanger-on I thought. PUBLIC RECEPTION!
