Bumper cron SHEPHERD (Coninued from page 2) dering why the federal govemn- ment is interested. People believe there is a role for the federal government to play in healthcare and the delivery of health-care ser- vices. I'm fed up with provincial politicians who blame the fed- eral government for their inability to properly administer the system by reducing the debate to funding. It is time the federal govern- ment developed a broad accountability framework to measure how effectively tax- payers' dollars are being spent. As well the federal govern- ment should police health-care standards across the nation. Why? To ensure Canadians do flot have to live in fear of flot having access to the system when they are in genuine need. Good seeds, and good gar- dening skills is ail it takes to grow a giant pumpkin, accord- ing to Wayne Kennedy. Equipped with the seeds fromn last years World Champion pumpkin,' Wayne and son Darreil set out to grow a giant of their own. In just their second year of competitive pumpkin growing, it seems they've found the right combination. From one plant the Kennedy's harvested the 401 lb. pumpkin that won at the Orono Fair, a 616 lb. puxnpkin that placed first at the Co-op competition this year and set a new record, and a 625 lb. pumpkin that placed 1 8th at the Great Pumpkin Commonwealth in Ottawa. "You just don't snap your fingers and grow a big pump- kmn," said Waýyne. First you need good seeds, and these you get from a competitive grower. A growing pumpkin needs plen- ty of water,* up to 100 gallons per day for each plant. Then there is the fertilizer, the con- stant vigilance for stem cracks, the slow rotation etc. The Artists. teatured at "Christmas at Presqu'iIe il'98 Christmas at Presqu'ile is once again gearing up to pre- sent top quality arts and crafts that have been the trademark of tis Show, and this year anexciting addition will be featured.
