Quantrili Kndul EuglIes host -a ni'ghtfre rmember The Ontario champion Peewee and Midget Kendal Royals basebaîl teams, as well as members of the Ontario finalists Junior team, were guests of honour and 'toastof the town' at the annual awards banquet of the Quantrili Kendal Eagles Senior Mens Basebail Club Saturday night aI the Orono Arena. The Bagles and Iheir orga- nizing commiltee were respon- sible for planning 'a night to be remembered' especialiy for the young members of 'Kendai Recreation minor basebaîl. The evening was respiendent with a wonderful roast beef dinner in the company of the 'who's who' of basebali in these parts, including members of the Kendal basebaili alumni, Kendal Recreation, friends and family and, a specialguest appearance by everyone's favourite Blue Jay, pitcher Paul Quiantrill of Kendai! Duirîng the awards portion of the evening, Jason Carrol was recognized as thie Eagles top pitcher finishinig the season, with .391 ERA. Troy Foster (who was absenit) balted .429 10 earn the Eagles' batting championishiip. He was also honoured as tihe Kenidal Eagles' most valuabie player of tie '98 seasoni. Bob Witlheridge of thie Midget Royals was also bestowed \with rmost valuabie player hionours afier being plre- sented with the "John Stark Memorial Trophy"- for M.V.P. of Kendai Basebail. Gerry Thiompsoni and Steve West amnongyst othiers, are previous winners ofîthis award. The "John Thompsoni Memorial Trophy" for most sportsman like player of Kendai Basebaîl went to Jay Hamilton of the Peewee Royals. The "Roy Sleep Memorial Trophy" donated by the KendaI Eagles Basebali Club b the person contributing mosi 10 basebali in Kendai was award- ed to Margo Knapp of R.R. 1, Orono. There were congratulatory speeches and accolades and many thanks given ail the way around--for players, coaches, and volunteers of Kendai Recreation. Bill Brittain paid tribute to the volunteers who seiflessiy donale their lime year after year. He also announiced that the Municipality of Clarington wil be rnaking a formnai presenta- lion to the midgets and pee- wees at Town Hall on November 23 in recognition of their Ontario championship wvins. MP.P., John OTooie sent certificates of congratulations from the province \which w\ere- presented by Brian Foster 10 peewee coach Ron Davis and m-idget coach Gerry Thiompson whio in turn gave thiem to thecir players alongY withi their newv team jackets. Highlighl of the evening came when Paul Quantrili arrived. Having spent his early yeairs in Kendai and playing tyke bal here, heurged the players and the basebail com- munity 10 be proud of their accompiishments. He said il was no small feat having lwo Ontario Championship teams (Midgels and Peewees) and two Ontario finaisîs (Seniors and Juniors) from the same organization ail in the same year--especiaiiy from a coni- munity the size of Kendal "ýpopulation 40" which of course, had everyone laughing in their seals. After speaking, he and Eagle player/manager, Mike Robinson drew names from a bal for door prizes. Some iucky young bail playelrs wenl home wilh eiîher a bal glove, a pair of spikes or an autograp hed -basebaîl and a handshake! Il was certainly a mnemo- rabie evening in celebralion of Kendal basebail. And, f-om ithe wvay lhings look now, nexl y'ear could very weli be another banner season! After ahl is said and done, credit nmusl be given 10 Kendal Recrealion, the present-day Eagles and formier Kendal bal Pl ayers who went lhrough the syslemi, then, in turn gave back 10 the sport. In whatever capac- ity they returned, it is because of their longy-term support and dedication, fromi generation 10 generation, that Kendal- Recrealion is today reaping the rewards of basebail excellence.
