Wa terquality cnr gels fun dingy Trent University will rece1vé its, largest single equipment granit ever - val- Ued at up to $8 10,:000 - from a federal science agency to, help establish a Water Quality Centre. Trent's success in the first round of the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) funding competition was announced to Senate Oct. 19 by Dean Paul Healy. The Trent proposal was measured agalinst three CFI criteria: quality of research and suit- ability of the infrastructure; contribution to strengthening the capacity for innovation; and potential benefits of the research to Canada. "Tis is a major success, according to Healy. "It's one of the largest awards made, and it's made to a small universi- ty. This wiîl provide a strate- gic boost to elevate Trent's reputation in environmental research and training, and evovlng emphasis on gradu- ate education in Watershed Ecosystems." Th1-e Trent proposai recog- nizes that Canada's popula- tion and econiic growth wll put increasing pressure on aquatic resources to sustain uses ranging from drinking water to recreation, urban development and isqdustry. The Water Quality Centre's research effort will develop cost-effective, rapid ai-d more effective techniques for evalu- ating water quality and train young researchers to be inno- vative and creative. The Centre's sophlsicated equlp- ment will be housed withln Trent's exlsting Environmental Sciences Building or the Science Complex. The proposal's major authors were Environm-ental and Resource Studies profes - sors Doug Evans and Chris Metcalfe. "The important part about the Centre is that it will con- tain tnly jJstate-of-the-art equipment," says Evans. T1rent will be the only uni- versity in this region to have such equipment, so research done here will have regional and national implications." RECYCLE From Aroi Here it is almost mid- niglit, Monday, and 1 arn just beginning with this colunrin for this week's issue of the Timés. *It really is nothing new and especially this week after seeing an adver- tisement that PBS 'IV was to air the musical, Cats, on Monday evening. Just had waf t through the whole affair so 1 could once more see and hear the finale including McGavity and of course the old cat singing Memorles and scaling the heiglits to heaven. 'Cats' is tooted as the longest running musical in the U.S. and in England. If you are interested in song, dance and lots of action you can understand the popularity of this musical show. According to a letter by Helen MacDonald -to the editor in this issue of the Times 1 was somewhat off base last week with the Flash Back article referring to the Port Granby Nuclear. Waste Dump. It was mainly a mixup in timing %Wi Helen has put in order stating that the first maj or protest related to the Port Granby dump was in the fail of 1986. If someone had asked I wouîd have dated the time prior to 1986 for that is but a short 12 years. 0f course every year has 365 days and 365 nights wi th the exception of on e in four years. I have to admit I played it off the top of my head. I know - that cani be somewihat dangerous. Helen mentions that toxic chemicals and nuclear waste is leaching into Lake Ontario. I wouîd lhope this is not the case and that inideed it should be the duty of out-r Te loftJJnY 9e/ //eêm real l2e 7im es! Municipal government to be assured that testing is regularly undertaken and there is'no contaminated leaching out of the dump area. Helen suggests we are simply voicing reason by insisting upon SAFE management of the stuif in a fashion that ensures it can be monitored forever and retrieved should human ingenuity develop a recycling process. One may ask 'could this not be undertaken at Port Granby where it has been for at least the past three decades?' For the Port Granby area it may be the safest solution as well as the cheapest. Ail energy sources have draw-backs be it nuclear, water, coal, oil and even gas. By any measure the Port Granby and other areas should be regularly monitored.
