Preparîng motorists for winter driving, Cold weather can turxi minor car maintenance prob- lems into automotive emer- gencies. To ensure your vehi- cie is ready for another Canadian winter, CAA Central Ontario suggests a complete tune-up. "Poor tires, cars that won't start and malfunctioning llghts become hazardous in bad weather," says Brian Holmes, OAA Central- Ontario's Manager 'of Consumer and Technical Services. "Motorists should, prepare their cars for winter driving and protect them- selves from car troubles by performing vehicle mainte- nance before the onset of win- ter." HOW TO GET YOUR CAR READY FOR WINTER: eCold weather starts require a fully charged 'bat- tery. Recharg e or replace weak batteries and dlean bat- tery cabie terminais and make sure ail connections are tightened. * If necessary, have your oul and filter changed. Make sure you use oil that wiii per- form in coid weather. A multi- grade oul (such as 5W 30 or 10OW 30) works wellinl almost ail engines and has a flowing consistency that meets vary- lng temperatures. Check your owner's manual for manufac- turer-recornmended oiis. * Make sure aitemnator or generator output is adequate and have drive beits checked for proper tension and exces- sive wear. Damaged Ignition wlres, a cracked distributor cap or womn spark plugs can make starting difficuit, or may cause a sudden break- down. Also check the head- lights, side-marker iights, emergency fiashers, direc- tional signais and brake lights. - To guard against frozen door iocks, appiy a graphite- based door lubricant. a Have your brakes inspected and adjusted,- if needed. Check brake and power steering fluids. * Get snow tires on before the likelihood of snowfall. Ensure tires are properly inflated and in good condi- tion. a Check exhaust system for leaks that could send car- bon monoxide into your car. e Check the radiator and hoses for leaks and cracks. To maintain the best operat- Ing temperature, make sure, the water pump and thermo- stat operate correctly. Check the antifreeze. A 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water is best. Test the heater and defroster. *Replace windshieid wiper blades if old or womn. F111 the SDG TRI COUNTY CRAFTS Chrismas CRAFT SALE, November 27, 28, 29. For the first few days I had a bail scan- ning pictures and saving them. It was a piece of cake. Later 1 decided what to do with those sav ed pictures and got ail the necessary equiprnent to realize my arnbitions, or so 1 thought. The big day carne for print- ing, and exciternent was run- ning high. I turn on the computer and try to get one of the saved pic- tures on the screen. Next 1 went out, and had a drink of water, did some chores around rny roorn, had a candy and presto, there was the pic-, ture. Okay. Now turn on the printer. Whoops, the picture was gone. Bring it up again and wait for it to materialize. Did more chores. After a couple of hours of this 1 sort of got the message. Following consultations with a knowledgeable friend, 1 By: Mary Rutherford discovered the poor machine was sated. 1 looked for a burping but- ton. None. More consulting, more waiting but no printouts. After two days of this and much more consulting, things may have improved, 1 arn not sure. But the lîght went on. Everyone seems to worry when they start putting dirty dishes in the refrigerator or not being able to cali someone you know very well by name. Those of us who are slightly older than the rest of the world get that very knowing 'you poor soul' look. But now 1 know what the problem is. We have just accu- mulated'so much-very interest- ing information we're sure wilI be needed sornetime. When our mind is called upon to pro- duce an answer, we have to wait, do chores, have a sand- wich, and presto, there it is. It is just that we know more than the younger onies. Now isn't that a relief to us ail?
