Meanwhile Back on the Ridge by David Craig After a couple of months of winter-type weather, everyone who has been stuck in the house is looking for a change. Some folk go south, some get strange and some houseclean. I well mind one spring when the wife thought it was time to repaper the front room. I pointed out to her the paper was less than twelve years old, I like the pattern and we hardly ever used that room anyway. In spite of this, the next morning after breakfast, we went into the front room. The furniture was out, the walls were bare and the paper was there. I suggested that the white walls looked nice for a change, but I could see she had her heart set on papering so we went at it. The first three strips went on well. I was told to smooth the middle and work out the edges. I was at the bottom with all the bending and my wife was up the ladder. It's no mistake that if you are over someone, you have a tremendous advantage. It's why officers in armies of old always had the commanding officer on a horse; why judges, ministers and school teachers have a raised platform to overlook the ordinary people. It worked for my wife too. birds of prey as they are a natural component of a healthy, diversified environment. Placing out food will also serve to attract squirrels learn to like 'em! Consult your field guide in advance so you will recognize 'strangers' when you see them. Enjoy the birds; enjoy the winter! Regular winter (feeder) species in the Orono area include: Mourning Dove, Downy Woodpecker, Hairy Woodpecker, Blue Jay, American Crow, Black-capped Chickadee, Red-breasted Nuthatch, White-breasted Nuthatch, European Starling, Cedar Waxwing, American Tree Sparrow, Song Sparrow, White-throated Sparrow, Dark-eyed Junco, Northern Cardinal, Purple Finch, House Finch, Common Redpoll, Pine Siskin, American Goldfinch, Evening Grosbeak, and House Sparrow. Uncommon, but not unexpected feeder visitors Every time we got a strip on, she would find a wrinkle near the centre so my half would come off, and she would pat it down too. I could see that the corner strip was going to have to be cut, so I suggested we do the full strips first. Then we would have the pieces to use under the window and the narrow piece. She was using the high voice she uses when the cows are in the garden, or the kids are bad, so I didn't catch what she said except "pat it." I misunderstood, and got a short lecture about a one-track mind, etc. After this, my wife said she thought she'd keep Joy home from kindergarten tomorrow to help her finish the job. I guess she couldn't learn any younger. Asian Chicken Noodle Soup Colourful and oh so healthy, this chicken noodle soup is perfect for when someone is feeling a little under the weather or needs an immune-enhancing boost. Provide garnishes of green onions, coriander and kick-it-up chili garlic sauce to put in the bottom of deep soup bowls before adding soup. Serve with both a spoon and fork (or chopsticks if you're dexterous). Consider too, the provision of suet that can be offered by reusing a mesh onion bag. If you don't have any bushes in a location within the yard that also affords you a great view from a window, you might consider creating a brush pile of dead limbs and branches at the base of the feeder or nearby - a place for small birds to seek cover when needed. Remember, when you provide food for winter birds and are successful in attracting them, you also provide an unnatural feeding location for certain avian predators (Northern Goshawk, Cooper's Hawk and Sharp-shinned Hawk) that typically feed on small birds. Learn to enjoy the include: Canada Goose, Ring-necked Pheasant, Ruffed Grouse, Wild Turkey, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Pileated Woodpecker, Common Raven, Horned Lark, Brown Creeper, American Robin, Graycheeked Thrush, Brown Thrasher, Northern Mockingbird, Bohemian Waxwing, Eastern Towhee, Fox Sparrow, White-crowned Sparrow, Swamp Sparrow, Harris's Sparrow, Snow Bunting, Lapland Longspur, Redwinged Blackbird, Rusty Blackbird Common Grackle, Brown-headed Cowbird, Pine Grosbeak, Red Crossbill, White-winged Crossbill, and Hoary Redpoll.
