6 - Orono Weekly Times Wednesday, July 8, 2009 LOCAL SPORTS Matt's Angle by Matt Dobson Swimbaits - your new favourite bass bait When I first saw the new soft plastic swimbaits that have flooded all the bait shops this spring, I was skeptical. To me it looked like a bait that will only work 10% of the time for 10% of the bass in the lake. But all the awesome articles and TV shows I've seen about the swimbait in California catching huge bass kept my interest high. My interest was put into practice when I visited a tackle shop in Bobcaygeon a week before bass season to stock up. The young owner of the store, a fellow tournament angler, showed me his favourite swimbaits and said I had to try them. Needless to say, after bass opening weekend I was hooked. This bait caught bass that I didn't even know were there, and bass that I was unable to catch with my ole' faithfuls. My favourite swimbaits are the Yum money minnow, and the Berkley hollow belly swimbait. Swimbaits also require a special hook. You must use a weighted wide gap hook, and texas rig it. This keeps the bait swimming straight and below the surface of the water, which is what you want. This bait can be used on any rod and with any type of line you like depending on the cover and structure you are fishing. Now the most effective way to fish this bait is with long casts and steady retrieves. Cast the bait as far as you can and wind it back at a slow to fast retrieve. Vary your retrieve until you catch fish and find what speed the bass like best, let them tell you what they want. As for locations to fish these baits, submerged weeds are best, at almost any depth. Fish the swim bait above the submerged weeds and it will draw the bass up from the weeds with explosive strikes. Give the swimbait a try next time you head out bass fishing, I guarantee your buddies will be begging you to borrow them. Matt "Dobber" Dobson, of Orono, attends college Sir Sanford Fleming College. He fishes using a 2000 Skeeter sx175 boat with a Yamaha 115hp motor. Three races at Mosport and two at Kawartha Speedway. The first race was at Mosport, and after qualifying third, Benedict battled the whole feature and finished a respectable fourth. The next race, also at Mosport, saw a good race day end with large disappointment. Again qualifying third for the feature, the MGS Performance go-kart showed it could run with the big guns at Mosport. On the first lap, and in the first corner, a kart from behind hit another kart causing a spin that collected the #29 kart. This resulted in a flat tire on the rear, and early retirement from the race. With a full field of eleven go-karters, the next race proved to be a challenge. Qualifying eighth for the prefinal, Benedict took the kart up to fifth starting position for the final. Running fifth in the feature, the sixth place kart miscalculated a corner and shoved Benedict off into the grass. After recovering, and coming back onto the track in last position with only three laps left, #29 caught and passed two karts to finish ninth. Next up was a return to Kawartha for the high banks of the oval. The Benedict team ended the day with a bent tierod end, but still managed to finish fifth. Later it was discovered that the engine had an internal problem. A trip to the engine shop was in order. Benedict Racing participated in a promotional appearance at Kawartha Speedway on Friday, June 19th during the stock car racing for the evening. The #29 go-kart looked tiny behind the stock cars during the parade lap. On Fathers Day, the team returned to Kawartha Speedway with a fresh motor and high hopes. It was fast right from the get-go. Benedict qualified on the pole, and tore through the field with the fastest lap times he had turned at the track. At the end of the feature, the youngster from Orono raised the first place trophy, winning for the second time this season. We would like to thank all our sponsors, all our supporters and family. Eagles split with Canadians by Chris Stark The Kendal Eagles ventured to Whitby on Sunday to play a doubleheader. In the first game the Eagles were led by righthander Russ 'Snuffy' Hunt. Hunt threw a complete game giving up only two runs, while striking out five. The Eagle bats remained steady and the offence was able to manufacture four runs, giving the Birds a 4-2 victory. The second game was a totally different story as rookie lefthander Chris Mullen took to the hill. Although he threw a solid game, the Eagles defence and offence both decided to go south. The boys lost an ugly game 8-0. This will be a busy week for the Eagles at home as they host Peterborough on Wednesday, 7:30 pm start. Then there is the huge Friday night showdown versus the rival Port Hope Flyers, 7:30 pm. The Birds are then in action again this Sunday as they look for some revenge against the Whitby Canadians, 12:00 noon start.
