6 - Orono Weekly Times Wednesday, September 23, 2009 LOCAL SPORTS Mosport Speedway wraps up an exciting 2009 campaign Orono's Rossiter wins third straight championship in modified class ORONO The season finale of the Autoworkers Community Credit Union Saturday Night Racing presented by PartSource at Mosport Speedway produced another exciting night of action and class champions in each of the four weekly stock car classes. The storyline in the R.P. Oil Modified class in 2009 closely resembled those of the past two seasons. Jim Rossiter (Orono, Ontario) came into the season as a three-time division champion with backto-back titles to defend and finished the season on top again. On his way to winning his third straight championship, Rossiter proved to be the dominant driver in the class recording an incredible 17 heat and 10 feature wins. He also swept the season finale's heat and feature races. Rossiter's primary rival, Bill Pickford (Keswick, Ontario), finished in the runner-up position. In a tight season-long battle between past champions, Jeff Scott (Bowmanville, Ontario) finished seventh in the final feature race to clinch the THORSONS EVT 6 or Less class title. The championship, Scott's second in the last three seasons, was built on six heat and three feature victories. He and co-driver Tony Lepizzera won the division in 2007. Defending champion Ryan Oosterholt (Blackstock, Ontario) finished second in class, while Kevin Hinds won the season's final race. The inaugural season for the newly revised Bob's Towing Sportsman division had a lot of close battles throughout the 2009 campaign, but former Late Model pilot Bill Northam (Oshawa, Ontario) took control of the division early and never gave it up. He won the title on the strength of four heat wins and five feature race victories including the season finale. Brad Stevenson (Courtice, Ontario) won the class in 2007 when it was known as the Bob's Towing ThunderCars, finished second. Kimmerly and defending champion Dwight Brown (Beeton, Ontario) waged some exciting battles, but because Brown ran only a part-time schedule he was not a factor in the battle for the championship. With the chase for the title wide open, Kimmerly took full advantage, winning seven heat races and two feature events. John Baker, Jr. (Oshawa, Ontario) finished second in the final standings, while Kimmerly's daughter Shannon won both of the season's final heat and feature races.
