10 - Orono Weekly Times Wednesday, October 7, 2009 Afternoon Tea at the Newcastle Town Hall By John Tomson I'm not a big tea drinker, coffee seems to be my wakeup drink, but, on a very brief visit to China a few years ago, I was surprised at the ever present green tea that was served at every meal. I found I drank it and liked it. After water, tea ranks as the second highest liquid consumed in the world. The variety of ways it's served is as varied as the people who live on the planet and the various blends of tea that are available. It's poured from on high in Morocco to either cool or aerate, in a blackened Billie over an open fire in Australia or with the ritual and tradition of the very British afternoon tea. In Britain, afternoon tea was first served in the 1840s, to fill the space between luncheon and dinner. Dining, for British high society in the mid 1800s, was being pushed back to 7:30 or 8 and a British noble woman began serving afternoon tea, as a snack. This was a time before women had the vote and these afternoon gatherings were an opportunity for women to gather, discuss various issues, including politics or maybe just gossip. Men generally did not attend. Within 50 years, the drinking of tea had spread to the entire British population at home and across the British Empire. Kimberly Chant-Allin has operated Tea Grannys and Friends for 10 years and she serves her guests in the style of a Victorian era Tea Salon. On Sunday, October 18th at noon, Tea Grannys is re-creating the Victorian Era at the Newcastle Town Hall. Ladies and Gentlemen will dress in style and enjoy a traditional Afternoon Tea.
