Wednesday, October 7, 2009 Orono Weekly Times - 3 Places I've done time by Clifford Francis "Down Home" Functions such as the chili cook-off seem to bring people from everywhere out of the wood work. I was standing on the street looking at the action and a couple came over and the woman spoke to me. She asked if I knew who she was and I didn't. "I am Anne Marie Bowden from down home," she said. Not to be caught or embarrassed I said, "You just get better looking with age." That pleased her no end. Her daughter now lived in Bowmanville and, she and her husband had come to visit. We went and had a coffee and talked about the "old days." I forgot to ask her how we met years ago, but I do remember my friend Evans Newell from Leskard saying he thought she was a helluva nice girl and that was good enough for me. She told her husband about some of our parties and I was near embarrassed. Back then I was making homebrew and more often than not she liked to have a little drop. Did we have some fun! She would tell me about the lovely newfie dinners her maw would make and offered to cook one up. I forgot what she cooked, but it was awful. It would make a pig puke, but I ate it anyway. Sometimes you have to give to get, and I wasn't about to spoil a good thing. Spring came and she started to miss "down home." The love of the salt air was what she needed so she headed home. Her dad had a fish boat that he used to fish off the Grand Banks. She went on board and was the cook. She often talked of the men being seasick, but I oft wondered if it was her cooking. She did turn out to be a very good cook I guess. The fishing boat is now in dry dock and she and her husband run a bed and breakfast. "Come down anytime and stay." I quickly told her I couldn't trust myself around her and would stay next door. She was pleased. If she comes up this time next year, she is going to enter the cook-off. I hope so. "Down Home Chili" made with fish would be nice. I think. Harold Curway walked his three dogs at the Newcastle Walk for Guide Dogs, held on Saturday as part of the Newcastle Fall Festival. DRPS officer charged A Durham Regional Police Services (DRPS) officer has been charged after a physical altercation took place involving a fellow police officer inside a police station. On Monday, September 28th, 2009 at approximately 6 p.m., the two male officers became involved in a physical altercation inside 16 Division, out of the view of the public. The divisional building is located at 1998 Regional Road 57 in Bowmanville. During the confrontation, the 37-year-old officer unholstered his firearm and threatened his fellow officer with it. The confrontation then ended abruptly and there were no injuries. The weapon was not fired. Ian Cameron, age 37, an officer assigned to 16 Division (Clarington), has been charged with Assault, Possession of a Weapon nologies tend to bring out public concern and apprehension." Burning garbage in an incinerator that would emit thousands of tonnes of pollutants into our already compromised air shed is hardly innovative. What's caused a lot of anxiety has been the unwillingness of the majority of Dangerous to the Public Peace, and Point Firearm. He was released on a Recognizance following a bail hearing yesterday. He has been suspended from duty pending the outcome of the case. The DRPS Professional Standard Unit is continuing the investigation. Police Constable Cameron has been an officer for seven years and joined the DRPS in May of 2004. Durham and Clarington politicians to adopt a precautionary approach, to consider safer options and to communicate honestly with their residents about the potential impacts of the proposed incinerator.
