Wednesday, October 14, 2009 Orono Weekly Times - 3 Council considers new voting options Clarington council held a special council meeting on Tuesday afteroon to discuss voting methods for the November 2010 municpal election. Since the 2000 election, the Clarington municipal election has been conducted using a vote-by-mail method. Muncipal staff are recommending a new system be implemented for next year's election, using a combination of the traditial polling station with paper ballot system and internet voting. Mayor Jim Abernethy has stated in the past that he was not a fan of the vote-by-mail method. In a letter to council, Marion Manders, a key member of Abernethy's 2006 election campaign team, expressed many of her concerns with the vote-by-mail system including the opportunity for frauduelent practices. After three hours of discussion Tuesday, councillors voted to table the matter until the next council meeting, to be held on October 26. Grow operation discovered in field Police were altered to a marijuana grow operation on the 6th Concession of Darlington, near Clemens Road by relatives of the property owner last Thursday. According to Durham Regional Police Sgt. Nancy Van Rooy, the homeowners' daughter and boyfriend discovered a new chain and padlock on the gate at the rear of the 10 acre rural property last Thursday, October 8. The couple called police who seized approximately 50 marijuana plants from the area enclosed by the locked gate. Neither the property owner or any of her relatives are suspects in the case, according to Van Rooy. It's A Girl!
