Tuesday, November 10, 2009 Orono Weekly Times - 3 H1N1 Continued from front page are looking for another location to hold the Bowmanville clinic. The vacant Veridian building currently being used at Lambs Road and Hwy. 2 has been deemed to be unsuitable for a number of reasons including its size and washroom facilities, according to Kyle. Health Department staff are eyeing another commercial building in Clarington, but, Dr. Kyle, said the contact person has the flu, which has caused a delay. Flu clinics held this week will continue to be for the priority population -- persons with chronic medical conditions, pregnant women, children from six months to five years old, and care providers of persons with high risk. A small amount of vaccine has been set aside for health care workers including paramedics and firefighters, Kyle told councillors. "The first week was to get as much vaccine to as many residents as possible. Now we have to step back to make sure health care workers have protection," Kyle stated. A supply of vaccine has been issued to area physicians. About 20 percent of area physicians who participate in the seasonal flu vaccine program have agreed to participate in the H1N1 vaccination program, Kyle said. The Department does not have enough vaccine for all the orders they have received from area physicians, he told councillors. "Patients are going to have to check with their physician's office to see if they are participating in the program and if they have received the vaccine." Of the roughly 40,000 50,000 doses of H1N1 vaccine administered in the Region thus far, Kyle says he has received only four reports of adverse events caused by the vaccine. "For the most part they were very mild," he noted. Of the minimum 166 cases of H1N1 reported in Durham Region, there have been two fatalities, according to Kyle, one recently and one several months ago. It is the doctors hope that at least half of Durham residents will be vaccinated, if not higher. To date, 16 percent have received vaccination. Are you in an abusive relationship?
