Wednesday, November 18, 2009 Orono Weekly Times - 9 SOUP Continued from page 2 why not when your mother is none other than Gloria Gray, the Julia Childs of St Saviour's. My wife Maureen said, "Just make that soup you do." No pressure here, right guys? I think every man who belongs to a church knows that it must have been God's plan that only women with advanced culinary skills can attend; once again proving my theory that God is a MAN. During the Tea and several phone calls afterwards requesting the recipe, I decided to put it in the paper for all who wish to use it. It's the Orono way. Cooking is my hobby and like all hobbies they can be excessive. Ask any widow to a golfer, bird watcher, hunter or fisherman. How about someone who is always in your way in the kitchen, uhm? All my cooking is known as "Poppa T's." I believe it is family code for beware. Enjoy, Bill Tomlinson Orono STOCKWELL Continued from page 5 time when Toronto really needs leadership. To date, a number of lightweight candidates have hinted that they may make a run for the top position, mostly coming from the present city council that is not deep in political talent. At the end of the day these wannabees will return to their local wards to be re-elected to a council that any mayor will have difficulty whipping into shape. So, what type of mayor would Smitherman make? The closest mayor I could compare him to would be John Sewell. I served with John Sewell on Metro Council when he was both a Toronto alderman and a Toronto mayor and, as well as he knew the municipal system of government, his approach to governance was dogmatic and ideological. When first elected, the left leaning voters of the inner-city felt that they Poppa T's Original Squash Soup Butternut Squash (about 3 ¾ pounds makes about 4 cups of mashed squash) Pare one pear for every 1-1/2 pounds of squash 1 white onion (about 6oz.) peeled, trimmed and finely diced 2oz. of butter ½ teaspoon of salt 1/8 of teaspoon of ground white pepper ¼ teaspoon of ground nutmeg and ground ginger 1/8 teaspoon of cardamom 2 cups of chicken stock ½ cup of 18% cream ¼ cup maple syrup 1 tablespoon of molasses Method Cut squash in half and discard the seeds. Remove seeds and skin of squash. I use a potato peeler on butternut squash as the skin is thin. A knife works well also. Cube peeled squash into 1" cubes. Put squash into a slow cooker and add chicken stock. Add diced onion, pears, salt, and nutmeg ginger, cardamom. Cook on high (about 2-1/2 to 3 hours) until tender. I use my stick food processor to puree the soup. If you do not have a stick grinder, you could process it through your food mill or food processor. Place back in crock pot, set it on low, add molasses and maple syrup, simmer for 30 minutes. When ready to serve, add cream. finally had a mayor who would support all of their leftwing causes and even commence a redistribution of wealth within the City of Toronto. However, it wasn`t long before Sewell was fighting with everybody on both sides of the political structure. It was his way or the highway and resulted in him being a one term mayor. I see Smitherman moulded from the same ilk. He has been referred to as a bully, and that is exactly what he is. His time at Queen`s Park was spent as a pit bull for Dalton McGuinty, placing unions over citizens, and ignoring fiscal restraint in overseeing the Health Ministry, ending up having to get out of Dodge City before the Marshalls arrived. Of course, it`s all speculation until we see a serious candidate step up to run against him. When push comes to shove it will be Smitherman going against John Tory, with Tory taking all the marbles.
