Wednesday, November 18, 2009 Orono Weekly Times - 7 Midgets go .500 on the week by Tyler Middleton After competing in a disappointing week two weeks ago, the midget Orono Leafs were back on the ice last week and were looking to improve their play. Their first game took place on Thursday night at home against the mediocre Woodville Hurricanes. The boys played a wellrounded game and moved the puck well. Their hard work was visible on the score board, and when the buzzer went, the score was 7-0 for the home team. Goals were scored by Jeremy Moore with two, Brandon Cox, Brandon Mathwich, Chris Kuijpers, Tyler Webster and Tyler Balson. Evan Rosseau played an impressive game in net, making some key saves, and pocketing himself his second shut-out of the season. The next game took place on Sunday afternoon, and was yet another home again. Cannington had made the drive down to face off against the Leafs. The boys played extremely well in the first and second period, dominating the play down low and creating excellent scoring opportunities. Unfortunately, Orono was only able to squeak one by the Cannington net minder. Due to unlucky odd man rushes, Cannington managed to pocket two goals, leaving the Leafs trailing 2-1 going into the third. When play continued, the boys lost the edge they had in the first two periods. Goaltender Ryan Brandt made some important saves, keeping the score low and allowing Cannington only one more. The final score was 3-1 for Cannington. The only Orono goal was scored by Fred Smith with the assist going to Cox. The Leafs continue play this week, facing two teams who they have not seen yet this year. Friday they will be facing off against Fenlon Falls, on the road, and Sunday the boys will be back at home to face Omemee. The puck drops at 5:30 p.m. Feel free to come out and enjoy some local hockey. Local girl rides with royalty Jennifer McKeen of Newtonville rode with royalty at the opening ceremonies for the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto on Friday November 6th. The seventeen-year-old Clarke High School Student, along with a number of her fellow Pony Club members representing Ontario Pony Clubs, was selected to provide a mounted escort for Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall as their landau entered the Ricoh Coliseum for the official opening of the Fair on Friday November 6th. The Pony Club member escort of their Royal Highnesses at the Royal Winter Fair was part of the Pony Club's 75th Anniversary of Canada. McKeen and her mount, a Welsh Cob named Millgate Braveheart, compete regularly in Welsh shows and have shown at the Royal Winter Fair. Previously, Jennifer was this year's Reserve Champion in the Training Level at the Canadian Pony Club National Dressage Championships held in Salmon River, Nova Scotia this past August. At the same competition, Jennifer's sister Johanna, was Reserve Champion in the Second Level competition, the highest level offered. PARK Continued from page 2 "dissing" (I believe that is the word) our park, we give them a chance to make amends or report them. The veterans we honoured this week fought for a democracy and as citizens we must stand up to the minority who abuse their freedoms. I must say that as an old boy, I am amazed at the tricks and the tenacity of our youth. I have been treated very politely when I ask about their sport. So I will do all I can to keep the punishment of removal from being enforced. If you need an old sage to help you set up a governing body for your area in the park call me, I'll be there. Let's make sure we keep our park a model for people who can live and share nature together. John Witheridge Orono Orono atom team starts strong with 6-0 record by Janine deBoer Orono's Atom rep team has played strong to start the season with a 6-0 record in league play and an "A" runner-up finish in the Campbellford tournament. The team, sponsored by Lawrcon Electric, has dominated its league opponents, outscoring them 32-4 since the start of the season. Goaltender Gibson Hegan has been outstanding in net, notching 5 shutouts so far this season. In the Campbellford tournament, the boys played great, defeating Tweed 3-0, and Campbellford 3-1. They came up against a well-rested Centre Hastings team and lost in the final 5-0. The team members are Devon Dennis, Nathan Hutchison, Justin Theberge, Seth Hampson, Daniel Phillippe, Tyler Morton, Zack Lagace, Ian King, Gus Qualtrough and Zack deBoer. Special recognition also goes to the AP players Sam Baker, Jacob Breen and Dylan VanHamburg for their hard work and dedication to the team. STUDENTS Continued from page 2 the only difference in the medal granted in 1919 to that of 2008 were the initials of the Sovereign. My overall purpose in sharing the stories of these two war heros was to help students personalize and remember someone specific while observing the two minutes of silence during the Remembrance Day assembly in school. Too often, students have no real basis in fact to think about these things and can be confused by the vague notion of remembering those who died to give us the freedoms we now enjoy. This was an attempt to have them thank and think about someone - a real someone. Randy Huebert Principal - Ormiston P.S.
