Wednesday, January 13, 2010 Orono Weekly Times - 3 The Reel Thing Movie Reviews by: Sharon McCartney There were some very interesting movies out over the Christmas Break. I enjoyed a few. The one I found most intriguing was Avatar. Director James Cameron (a Canadian, I might add) has waited 12 years since Titanic. It must be hard to come back thinking you could never better your last film. Well he seems to be... Avatar is now the second grossing movie of all times, second only to Titanic. Cameron had the idea for Avatar 14 years ago, but technology had to evolve and finally the filming became feasible. The 3D effect in this film is wonderful. If you go to see it, go to a theatre that has 3D. The story line is good. The main star, Sam Worthington, is from New Zealand; you would have seen him in Terminator: Salvation, and the soon to be released Clash of the Titans. I truly enjoyed this film. Something different, but the story holds, it isn't just special effects. I give this film a 4.5 out of 5. I also went to see Invictus. Morgan Freeman is great in this film. He should get the Oscar for best Actor. When watching him, he draws you into Nelson Mandela and you start to see Mr. Mandela instead of Mr. Freeman. That is acting. The movie is based on the World Rugby Championships held in South Africa. Matt Damon plays the team caption, and it is directed by Clint Eastwood. A very good film. I give this film 4 out of 5. The latest Sherlock Holmes film is an excellent see. Robert Downey Jr. plays a great part... he is a favorite of mine. Jude Law isn't hard to look at either. They are paired up very well and have chemistry together. Lots of action, comic relief and Rachel Adams is a wonderful distraction. She plays the love interest of Holmes. There is one actor I would like to mention, Robert Maillet, born in St Marie-de-Kent, New Brunswick. He was also in the film 300 with Gerard Butler.
