6 - Orono Weekly Times Wednesday, January 13, 2010 LOCAL SPORTS Orono major atoms 1-3 at tournament by Esther Sims The Orono major atom house league team travelled to Kingston on December 29 to take part in the Kingston Causeway Classic. Meeting the Fort Henry Flames for the first of three games that day, and with new lineups in place, Orono fell behind 1-0. Gaining momentum as the game progressed, Orono had an impressive rally late in the third, but time ran out leaving Orono down 2-1. Jonathan Feddema scored the lone goal. In its second match up, Orono faced the very strong St. Joseph's team. Behind by 2, Matthew Caudle scored late in the first to close the gap, but Orono was shutdown in the second while St. Joseph's scored 3. Orono continued to work hard resulting in a goal from Ethan Lock midway through the third, but St. Joseph's took the win with a 72 score. For the third game, Orono came out working hard and was more settled in its new lineups as it faced Holy Name Hurricanes. Playing as a team, in one of the best efforts of the year, Orono capitalized when Feddema scored on a pass from John Sims. Cassy Dolley played one of her best games, digging for the puck and delivering strong passes. Unfortunately, Orono was unable to score another, leaving the team down 2-1. Not discouraged, the Orono players were more determined than ever Wednesday morning against St. John's. It was halfway through the first when St. John's opened the scoring with 2 goals within 21 seconds of each other, but three minutes later, Orono's strong passing play resulted in Caudle scoring Orono's first from Feddema, followed 3 minutes later with Feddema scoring on a pass from Caudle. St. John's came back with a goal early in the second in this exciting match up. Before the period ended, Brett McCormick -who was having one of his best games - scored, with assists going to Lucas Iantomasi and Ethan Lock. Iantomasi scored early in the third from McCormick to make it 4-3, but St. John's came back with one of its own to tie it at 4. Exciting play continued and with just 1:17 to go, Sims scored from a well-executed passing play from Feddema and Caudle. Austin Woodhouse played strong at centre and had several scoring opportunities in the third. With just 8 seconds left, Feddema scored from Evan Vey to end the tournament with a 6-4 win. Congratulations to the players for their sportsmanship and to everyone who made this a fun experience for the team. Our MVPs for the tournament were: game one Jonathan Feddema; game two - Ethan Lock; game three Cassy Dolley; game four Austin Woodhouse.
