6 - Orono Weekly Times Wednesday, January 20, 2010 LOCAL SPORTS Orono Juveniles continue winning ways by Doug Henderson The Orono Juvenile team started 2010 with a win against the New Tecumseh Tornados (TNT). Both teams couldn't find the back of the net in the first period of the game. The Tornados started the scoring off in the second period, with Orono coming back with a point of its own within a minute, following that up with another before the period ended. Points went to Tim Kay and Dana Law, with assists going to Brady Burns, Aaron Baker and Trevor Dwyer. Final score of the game: 2 - 1 for Orono. Sunday, January 10th, TNT came to Orono for a re-match. The first period had Orono putting three points on the board before TNT found the Orono net. Cody Graham started Orono's scoring off, followed by Tyler Armstrong and Josh Rekker, with assists going to Burns, Brock McGill and Baker. In the second period, Sam Jackson raced down the ice to net an unassisted goal. Not to be outdone, Josh McGill also managed an unassisted goal. In the third period, Tom Meester scored, assisted by Rekker, and with just 32 seconds in the game, Brad McGill put the last point on the board, assisted by Brett Brown. TNT scored one more in the second period and twice more in the third, but couldn't push past the Orono squad, leaving a final score of 7 - 5 for Orono. On January 16, Orono hosted the Saturday night game. Troy Webster had a great game in net, allowing the Pickering team to only slip one by him. Brad Nicholl also had a strong game, netting both of Orono's points, assisted by Kay, Josh McGill, Greg Konarowski and Baker. Orono walked away with a 2 - 1 win. The Orono team had a busy weekend with a game on Sunday night against the first place Ajax team. The game was exciting from the drop of the first puck until the final buzzer. Ajax scored the first goal but it didn't take Orono long to tie it up, with Jackson scoring an unassisted goal. The team was pumped when they took the lead in the second, with Trevor Munce putting the second Orono point on the board, assisted by Meester. Orono tried to hang onto the lead, but Ajax managed to tie it up again in the third. The Orono Juvenile's season is coming to a close with four games remaining: Saturday, January 23rd in Pickering at 7 pm; Sunday, January 24th in Schomberg at 4:40 pm; back in Schomberg on Friday, January 29th at 8:15 pm; and Orono's final home game on Sunday, January 31st at 3:30 pm. MIXED LEAGUE Thursdays 7 - 9 pm Orono Leafs major tykes take a pair by Rebecca Kelly After posting a 4-4 tie in the previous week, the Orono Stutt's Pharmacy Leafs started their weekend with a home game on Friday night against Clarington Canadian Tire Thunder. The forward line of McKinley Martin, Ethan Sabotich, and Ethan Vanderheyden was determined to support the hard work of goaltender Jarrett Whyte, Martin leading the line with four goals, followed by Sabotich's goal. Orono's second offensive threat came from the line of Josh Peppiatt, Calum Wiggans and Kiera Branton. Peppiatt added a goal, with his linemates providing lots of excitement around Clarington's netminder. Orono's defensive pairs of Charlie Kelly with Benjamin LeClair, and Jack Kuipers with Cole Hardy, held the blue line like a rock wall. With a combined team effort, the Leafs posted a 6-3 win. Saturday's game took the Orono Major Tykes to Bowmanville to face Clarington #1. After giving up a 3-1 lead, the new line combination of Martin, Kuipers and LaClair proved strong, with two breakaways by Kuipers, one rewarded with a goal. Peppiatt added four goals, along with Hardy's net crashing single, with support from their linemates Branton, Kelly, Wiggans, Taggart and Whyte. Hardy and Whyte added assissts. With relentless effort and hard back checking, the team rallied around goaltender Ethan Vanderheyden to come to a final score of 6-4. Next game is at home to Newcastle on Thursday, January 21 at 6 pm. After finishing the regular season with a respectable 0.750 winning percentage, good enough for third place in the league, the team travelled to North Frontenac to start the playoffs. The boys came out strong, scoring just 35 seconds into the game, and played great defensively, winning the game 3-1. Nathan Hutchison notched a hat trick in the game, with assists to Devon Dennis and Seth Hampson. Game two was a back-andforth affair with both teams having numerous opportunities to score, but unfortunately the home squad came out on the losing end of a 1-0 score. Goaltender Gibson Hegan stood on his head numerous times to keep the opponents to only one goal in each game. The defence -- Ian King, Zack deBoer, Justin Theberge and Gus Qualtrough -- aided in this low goals-against average. On the offensive end, Tyler Morton, Zack Lagace and Daniel Phillippe worked hard against a strong North Frontenac goaltender. AP's Sam Baker, Jacob Breen and Dylan Van Hamburg also played an important role in the games. The boys travel back to North Frontenac on Saturday at 4:00 pm for game three. Good luck boys.
