Wednesday, January 20, 2010 Orono Weekly Times - 7 Annual Owl Prowl Hike in Enniskillen Join Central Lake Ontario Conservation at Enniskillen Conservation Area for our annual Owl Prowl on Friday, Jan. 29th starting at 7:00pm. Our special guest will be the birds of prey experts from SOAR and one of their winged wonders to help participants learn more about owls, their behavior and the role they play in our watersheds. We will provide a short presentation, a hike into the woods followed by hot apple cider and a hands-on exploration of the owl world. This is a FREE event however, due to limited space, pre-registration is required. Most owls are nocturnal birds, meaning they sleep during the day and hunt at night. Their primary diet consists of rodents and rabbits, but some owls -- like the Great Horned Owl -will eat frogs, snakes, fish and even the odd skunk. "While it is rare to hear or see an owl, they are very common around our watershed," says Cathy Grant, Educational Instructor with Central Lake Ontario Conservation. "Participants will need to be all ears for the hike in order to determine what species of owl is calling to us." She adds, "The call of a Great Horned Owl is a hoo hoo-hoo hooooo hooooo while the call of the Barred Owl sounds more like "who cooks for you, who cooks for you all." "Together we will explore the magic of the night environment along the forest trails and do a little hooting," says Grant. "If you have never experienced a night hike before you will not want to miss this one!" Participants are asked to please dress for the weather and bring a mug for hot apple cider after the hike.
