Wednesday, March 31, 2010 Orono Weekly Times - 13 Women 50-plus encouraged to get screened for breast cancer April is Cancer Awareness Month and Durham Region Health Department encourages women 50 and older to commit to screening for breast cancer by having a mammogram every two years. According to a Health Department survey, in Durham Region breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women. Cancer Care Ontario research states that approximately 80 per cent of breast cancer cases are found in women 50 and older. "There is no way to prevent breast cancer, but if found early there is a good chance it can be cured," said Mary Sue O'Connor, a public health nurse with the Health Department. "Having a regular mammogram can help find a lump before it can be felt and before it spreads to other parts of the body." According to Cancer Care Ontario, more than 95 per cent of women diagnosed with breast cancer are alive and well five years after early detection and treatment. Cancer Care Ontario also estimates that in the next year, 8,700 Ontario women will develop breast cancer and approximately 2,100 women will die from the disease. The Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP) is a free service that provides women 50 and older with high quality mammography services. After the age of 50, women can book their own appointment for a mammogram at any OBSP site. A health care professional's referral is not needed.
