After five months of roundrobin play, a month of playoffs, and two white-knuckled final games, a mighty little team of only nine players from Orono has won the Minor Atom Division 1 Championship. The Orono Minor Atoms triumphed as they made their way through an incredible season of 26 wins and only 1 loss. In round-robin play, the team scored a reported 130 goals -an average of 6.5 goals per game -- while allowing only 44 pucks to cross their goal line. Who would have thought in September, when a roster of nine children was announced, eight skaters and one goalie, that they would go on to have such a successful year? Game after exciting game, with continuance, spunk, and love of the game, this team came together and realized success. A good team starts with great coaches, and in this department this team was very fortunate. Their coaches, Dean Baker, Brad Clemens, and Scott Diamond treated them to the greatest tales of motivation and the power of positive thinking. They lead the children through a season with lessons in respect, fair play and sportsmanship, the ultimate victory in any hockey season. This team of gladiators consisted of Sam Baker, Jacob Breen, Bailey Clemens, Evan Cummings, Natalie Diamond, Jarrod Gjaltema, Jasper Godin, and Keifer Phillips, each rotating through offensive and defensive positions as the team required, while esteemed netminder Dylan Van Hamburg remained steady between the pipes. Eagerness got them started, tenacity kept them going, and determination lead them to game-end cheers! So as we close out this great hockey celebration, let's give three cheers for the Orono Minor Atoms. Hip Hip Hooray! Hip Hip Hooray! Hip Hip Hooray!
