10 - Orono Weekly Times Wednesday, June 2, 2010 Municipality hires new solicitor The newest member of Clarington's senior staff; Municipal Solicitor Mr. Andy Allison, was formally welcomed to the Municipality at Monday night's council meeting. In introducing Allison, CAO Frank Wu explained that he was coming to Clarington from the City of Pickering where he had worked for four and a half years. Prior to that he spend 13 years as inhouse counsel for the Region of Durham and prior to that he worked for five years for a Bay Street law firm where he specialized in commercial and real estate law. For the past decade, Allison has worked on a variety of files with a focus on land use planning and development issues, according to Wu. In February Clarington council decided to hire an in-house lawyer rather than contracting-out the municipality's legal requirements. Wu reported to council in February that over the past decade the municipality spent, on average $1 million per year in legal services. Solicitor Dennis Hefferon had been providing legal services to the municipality for almost 20 years. Wu recommended that Clarington establish an in-house legal department, with a lawyer and support staff, to do all the municipality's legal work except labour law. Council approved a $320,000 budget for their new legal department for this year. Included in the department budget is Allison's salary, which is in the range of $116,000 to $152,000. Allison lives in Whitby with his wife and their three teenage boys.
