Wednesday, June 9, 2010 Orono Weekly Times - 7 Clarington Public Library hosts Ride to Read The Clarington Public Library and other public libraries in Durham Region are excited to announce a unique partnership with Durham Region Transit (DRT). Throughout the months of July and August, children enrolled in the TD Summer Reading Club at their local library can ride DRT for free through the Ride to Read program. Children in elementary school (kindergarten to grade eight) will receive special stickers on their library cards at their local branch as part of joining the reading club. Children will need to register in both July and August for the stickers, which will turn their library cards into transit passes. An adult will need to accompany those children 10 years of age and under, and will be required to pay the regular adult fare. "It is a great initiative. The Clarington Public Library is proud to be taking part in such an innovative program, and grateful for the support of the Durham Camp 30, the former Boys Training School in Bowmanville, was a popular destination for the Clarington Doors Open event on Sunday. John Conrad (C) was one of the tour guides who led the more than 1,000 visitors through the site. Region Council and Durham Region Transit," says Clarington Public Library Board Chair, Gail Rickard. "Ride to Read opens up new ways to reach the library. By using local transit, children can learn about environmental awareness, and discover new things about their community. Learn and explore with the Summer Reading Club, and by sharing a trip to your library on a Durham Region Transit bus." In addition to the Clarington Public Library, the public libraries of Ajax, Brock, Oshawa, Pickering, Scugog, Uxbridge, and Whitby are participating in the Ride to Read program. The theme of this year's TD Summer Reading Club, Destination Jungle, allows children to travel to exotic lands, explore tropical environments, and embark on an adventure of discovery of far away places through the shelves of their public library. Every child who registers will receive a free poster, activity book, and stickers. Children report on the books they have read during the summer in order to earn stickers. Each branch of the Clarington Public Library will have weekly drop-in programs with games and crafts to encourage the love of books and reading.
