14 - Orono Weekly Times Wednesday, August 11, 2010 O'TOOLE Continued from page 2 government must work together with farms and agribusinesses to ensure farms not only survive, but thrive and create new jobs and investment in the years ahead. Action Needed Against Driver's Licence Fraud When you're dealing with the potential for identity theft, there must be rigorous safeguards in place that will protect the personal information of Ontarians. It would seem that this hasn't happened at Ontario's online driver address change service. In an announcement July 31, the McGuinty government retracted yet another poorly managed program when they announced the suspension of the service until an investigation had been completed. This government has introduced several programs and services without sufficient systems verification. Recent examples include solar power prices under the microFIT program, the new eco-tax, and we should not forget the billion dollar Ehealth system failure. During the past fiscal year, more than 260,000 driver licence address change transactions were completed online. Given the popularity of this program, it is important that government takes the time to get it right. More Funds to Reduce ER Wait Times Ontario is providing the Central East Local Health Integration Network $7.3 million to help shorten ER wait times. The funding is under the provincial "Pay for Results" program. In Durham Region, allocations include: $841,200 for Lakeridge Bowmanville; $1,097,100 for Lakeridge Oshawa; $570,00 for Mental Health Durham and $547,800 for Rouge Valley Ajax. Under the "Pay for Results" program, hospitals and their health care partners promise to meet specific emergency room (ER) wait time reduction targets. The Ontario hospitals receiving these funds are committed to treating more patients and improve performance by 15 per cent over the course of the year. Under its Integrated Health Service Plan, the Central East LHIN plans to save one million hours of time patients spend in emergency departments at hospitals within the Central East LHIN. The Province defines ER waits as the time that elapses from triage to the point where the patient either is admitted to a hospital bed or discharged from the ER. While the McGuinty government may claim waiting under 10 hours is a success, most people who have to visit an ER don't see it that way, especially if the wait involves young children or frail elderly patients. Ontario can do better. The key is to work with frontline healthcare professionals to ensure accountability and invest the funds where they are needed most. Input Invited into Reforms for Non-Profit Sector The Standing Committee on Social Policy will consider Bill 65, An Act to revise the law in respect of not-for-profit corporations at hearings in Toronto, Kitchener, Sudbury and Kingston this month. The meetings take place Aug. 23, 24, 25 and 26. Those who wish to comment on the Bill may send written submissions to the committee by 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 26. An electronic version of the Bill is available on the Legislative Assembly website at: www.ontla.on.ca. Among the Bill 65 highlights are: simplification of the incorporation process for non-profit organizations and expanding the rights of members by providing greater transparency for financial statements and access to records.
