Wednesday, August 25, 2010 Orono Weekly Times - 5 Durham Regional Police Services Police Warn Public of Online Loan Scam DRPS fraud investigators are once again warning the public about online loan scams after a Clarington woman lost almost $6,000 recently. On August 11th 2010, police began an investigation into a report of a financial scam in which a Clarington resident responded to a newspaper advertisement offering loans for those with credit problems. The victim visited the advertised website and completed an online loan application by providing personal information. After being advised she was approved for a $50,000 loan, she was instructed to wire money to them for insurance purposes. A short time later, she was instructed to forward more money through Western Union for additional administration fees. Police are reminding citizens that any legitimate financial lending institution will not ask for large sums of money up front to cover the cost of loans.
