Durham Region Health Department Quit smoking program aims to help residents stay quit Durham Region Health Department, is offering two free quit smoking programs for residents of Durham Region. Programs will take place in Oshawa and Brock beginning with an information session, followed by six group sessions. The group sessions will focus on developing the skills needed to quit successfully and stay quit. The Oshawa group will be held at The Wynfield Long Term Care Residence, 451 Woodmount Drive, Oshawa. The information session will be held on Sept. 21 from 7 to 8 p.m., with the group sessions running on Tuesday evenings, Oct. 5 to Nov. 9 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The Brock group will be held at the Cannington Arena, 91 Elliot St., Cannington. The information session will be held on Sept. 16 from 7 to 8 p.m., with the group sessions running on Thursday evenings, Sept. 23 to Oct. 28 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. "Research shows that the majority of current smokers want to quit and we're here to help," explained Shelly Munro, a public health nurse with the Health Department. "At the sessions, we hope that participants will learn to identify current smoking patterns in order to better understand triggers that lead to smoking and what can be done to handle them."
