Wednesday, October 27, 2010 Orono Weekly Times - 9 Africa: On Safari Go wild at the Orono Town Hall Local naturalist and wildlife photographer Jim Richards will present an illustrated talk about a month-long photo safari to Kenya and Tanzania last January and February. Jim and his wife Sherri joined with a group of photographers and wildlife artists (which included such notables as wildlife artist Robert Bateman), and led by Winnipeg-based photographer Robert Taylor for this "trip of a lifetime" adventure. Jim intends to share some of the photo highlights of their trip during a presentation at the Orono Town Hall on Nov. 4th, from 7-9 pm. The doors will be open at 6:30 for those wishing to peruse a wide selection of artworks and photography that will be on display for the purpose of a silent auction. These works were donated to Jim for the evening presentation by famed Canadian wildlife artists such as Bateman, Barry Kent MacKay, Jennifer LaBella, and our own (local artist) Sally Thurlow. In addition, a few leading Canadian wildlife photographers such as Birgit Bateman, R o b e r t Taylor and M i k e M c E v o y donated works for the auction, all with an African theme. Jim and Sherri were overwhelmed with not only the diversity of the wildlife, but the sheer numbers, in addition to the beauty of the landscape. Jim feels that they took so much from Africa (photos, memories and friendships with locals) that they would like to put something back. It is for this reason that they are willing to share their adventure and try to raise money for a few charities (Ryan's Well, and the Jane Goodall Foundation) for fresh water wells, a rare commodity in the rural portions of these countries, and the Gathering Grannies, Clarington (for the Stephen Lewis Foundation for HIV/AIDS in Africa). This disease has left countless children without parents and many grandmothers with the task of raising them. All proceeds for the evening will go to these worthwhile charities. Entrance fee at the door (no advanced ticket sales) is $15.00 for adults and $8.00 for children under 12, accompanied by a non-perishable item for the Clarington East Food Bank. Jim reports that the Town Hall Board waived the rental fee for the evening and have offered to provide refreshments. Many local store owners have displayed the promotional posters and a few other people have played an integral role for the evening event.
