Wind energy consultant talks to ratepayers group A large number of visitors were in attendance at the most recent meeting of the Newcastle/Bondhead Ratepayers Association. Bondhead resident Roger Yates, Professional Engineer and consultant for the wind energy industry since 2002, was the guest speaker at the October 18th meeting of the ratepayers' group, held in the Lion's Den at the Newcastle Community Centre Yates presented a slide show of many wind farm installations across North America, including some he had been involved with in his professional capacity. "Wind power is the most attractive alternative energy source," Yates said at the beginning of his presentation. He then went on to "debunk the myths" associated with wind power. "I think these things are beautiful," he stated. "I think the power lines that go by my house are ugly," Yates said. Yates claimed the noise created by the wind turbines, "is like a whisper in a bedroom." At 500 feet away, "noise from a wind turbine is like a kitchen refrigerator," according to Yates. People who don't like wind farms come up with all kinds of ideas, according to Yates, one of them is that the turbines kill birds. This is not an issue, according to Yates who claimed, "One wind turbine will kill less birds than your household cat." One of the things Yates said he liked about wind farms is that farmers who own the land leased by the wind farm developer can still go on farming 98-percent of their land. Farmers like the wind farms because they get a steady income from leasing WIND see page 4 ~ Happenings ~ Saturday, October 30, 2010 - Orono United Church Roast Beef Dinner with Homemade Pies, 5 pm.
