Wednesday, October 27, 2010 Orono Weekly Times - 5 Joanna Braun inducted into local Sports Hall of Fame by Sue Weigand Newcastle's Joanna Braun (nee Van Dyke) was inducted into the Clarington Sports Hall of Fame in the Athlete category at an induction ceremony at the Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex on Saturday evening. Braun grew up in Newcastle, where she honed her skills in softball and volleyball. She went on to attend Durham College in Oshawa, where she was recognized with a Durham College Athlete of the Year Award. She was named the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association's Athlete of the Year for volleyball and softball in 1996-1997. She went on to be named an "Honoured Member (Athletes)" of the OCAA's Hall of Fame, and was also named an "All Canadian" by the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association. Named in the Athlete category, Braun was one of five inductees into the Clarington Sports Hall of Fame this year. According to the Clarington Sports Hall of Fame nomination form, a nominee must have demonstrated outstanding achievement in their athletic field of endeavour or displayed above-average proficiency in a number of sports over a period of time, or brought honour and fostered pride in the Municipality of Clarington through their athletic achievements, in order to be considered for selection in the Athlete category. Recipients may be inducted in one of four categories: Athlete, Builder, Team, and Honourary. This year's other inductees included John James (Builder), Michael Patrick (Athlete), Dave Wright (Builder), and St. Marys Cement Redman Hockey Team, 1967/68 (Team). The ceremony included cocktails and dinner followed by the presentation of awards. Guest speaker for the ceremony was Jennifer Hedger, TSN on-air personality and CTV host of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. Participants will register at 9:00am, followed by a 15minute energizing stretch and warm up at 9:45am led by Dr. Katy Spiewak of Ganaraska Chiropractic and Healing Arts in Port Hope. Once participants are warmed up and ready to go, the 10km and 5km race through the beautiful Ganaraska Forest will begin at 10:00am. The cost to join in this funfilled day is $40/family of four (children under 13 years of age), $20/adult (19 years of age and older), $10/youth (13-18 years of age), and $5/child (children 13 years old and under). The new multi-use Ganaraska Forest Centre is located just 20 minutes from Port Hope and Orono. When travelling from the west, exit Hwy. 115 and travel east about 10 km on Durham Road 9. Turn left at the Cold Springs Camp Road sign and proceed 4 km to the forest. From the east, travel west off County Road 28 onto County Road 9 and proceed about 2 km west of Elizabethville. Turn right at Cold Springs Camp Road and travel 4 km to the forest.
