6 - Orono Weekly Times Wednesday, October 27, 2010 LOCAL SPORTS Orono Midget Leafs have their first win at home by Ashley Bain The Orono Midget rep team hosted another game at home on Thursday, Oct. 21 against Brock. The boys were determined to win, as the first period started. Both teams came out skating hard, with equal shots on net. But it wasn't until mid-period that Brock got one in on the Orono net, with another one following soon after, making the score 2-0 for Brock. With the second period underway, Orono wasn't ready to give up that easy. With some great passes, the Leafs were able to score a beautiful goal from the blue line, making the score 2-1. With a few minutes left in the second, Brock scored another goal on the boys, leaving the score 3-1 going into the third period. With only 15 minutes left in the game, Orono had some catching up to do. The boys pulled it together with clean hits on point passes, and amazing teamwork which earned them a total of 4 goals in the third period, making the final score 5-3 at the end of the game for the Orono Midgets. Amazing goal tending by Ryan Brandt helped Orono in their fight. Ian Third, Josh Canfield, Pierce Warwick, Chris Haass, and Josh Ruddell scored Orono's 5 goals. Assists were made by Chris Kuijpers (3), Cody Lamers (3), Colin Lamers (1), Josh Canfield (1), and Ryan Bain (2). Together the boys made Orono proud with their first win this season. On Sunday, the Orono Midgets held their usual home game against the Manvers Mustangs. As the first period started, the boys were coming off their high of last game's win, as they score their first goal within 11 seconds of the period's start. But the Mustangs weren't going to let Orono win that easy, scoring a goal within minutes after Orono's. With the game tied at 1-1, both teams began to hustle, scoring again one goal each back to back, making the score 2-2. With the second period underway, Orono was able to get another one in the Mustang's net early in the period, giving the boys a 3-2 lead in the game. With less then five minutes left in the period, the Mustangs were able to get up through the Leaf's defense and offense and get not one but three goals in on the Orono Leafs before the period's end. The score was now 5-3 for the Mustangs going into the third. During the third period, the Mustangs got their 6th and final goal. Despite Orono's efforts, the boys just couldn't produce anymore goals, making the final score 6-3 in favor of the Mustangs. Goals scored by Chris Kuijpers, Josh Canfield, and Jeremy Moore. Assists were made by Goaltender Evan Rosseau, Ryan Bain, Chris Kuijpers, and Chris Haass. The Orono Midget Leafs' next home game will be hosted on Oct. 31 against Newcastle.
