Students were asked to bring in canned food in order to wear a Halloween costume. St. Francis of Assisi parish will be donating all the canned food collected to St. Vincent de Paul. Close to 900 cans of food was collected. Driving conditions can change quickly, from one area to the next, during the winter. Drive cautiously in areas with bridges, hills, valleys, curves, or in sheltered and shaded areas, as these sections of road freeze much sooner in cold weather and stay frozen long after the temperature improves. The Region has a two-step approach towards preventing slippery road conditions. The techniques, now being used in various areas of the southern municipalities, include pre-wetting salt prior to applying it to roads, and anti-icing, which involves directly applying brine to dry roads. Even with these precautions, drivers need to remember to drive safely. In order to be ready for what winter weather will bring, it is important to prepare vehicles for winter driving. Start by changing to winter tires, which improve safety and increase traction on slippery snow-covered or icy roads. Organize an emergency kit with items such as blankets, a shovel, a flashlight, a flare, food and a first aid kit to place in the trunk. Also begin using windshield washer fluid rated for 40°C ranges. Finally, be sure to check the weather and driving conditions before going out on the roads. Allow for extra driving time, or wait until conditions improve, if necessary. These simple precautions are especially important in the northern areas of Durham Region where freezing roads and snow may be experienced sooner than in the lakeshore communities. Winter driving is challenging for all of us, including the winter maintenance crews from the Works Department. Please respect that snowplow drivers and trucks must travel at reduced speeds. Watch for their blue flashing lights and remain at a safe distance back. It is important not to pass snowplows or salt trucks, as they may have reduced visibility from flying snow.
