The most side-splitting "French" I have ever heard, is that spoken by Alf. Watts of Port Hope. How in the world hë makes himself understood, L don't know, but with much waving of hands, and his "Oompe" "wee he can get anything. They will look at some of the boys with surprise, when they "talk French" (?) but Alf. gets a smile and an "ah Wee" most of the time. It you had seen him asking for eggs m "London French" as he speaks it, you would have sat down and called for the doctor. He says "O offs ! O offs^ and flaps his arms and says "Compre "an we"--and he gets eggs. If we were to do the same, they would shure to think we wanted them to look at an aeroplane outside. However, heinakps them understand, I can't say but he certainly can get things which. I dare not try to ask for myself. Alf. is now our "fun boy" and his manner of saying big words, is the fun of the day at times. I shall not give you any--(I migh spell the big words wrongly,) but he doesn't mind, so long as it sounds' like what it means. There's one thing about him he doesn t know how to be afraid, and he has a big heart, in a very small body. He says I am to ask you "to give the gents who run the Port Hope papers an "intimidation" that he would like a home paper vny. much. Of course, I don't mean to say the Editors of the papers are not interested, interested, but I wonder if there is a spare copy around by chance every I thank you for your kind offer of papers, and would certainly like some of the Sunday editions. Don't forget the "funny papers" for that's most welcome of all.. The ridiculous seem to appeal to one, as put forward in the comic section of the papers. I am myself, myself, as I always was, found of those pictures tho they are for "kids" I suppose. suppose. Magazines also are very welcome welcome for their light reading, and particularly particularly for the pictures, tho they are cheaper if bought in England and sent I expect. We have had some good parcels divided amongst us lately, and most | welcome was a box of maple sugar I from friends of one of the boys of the 42nd. Candies are as welcome to us ! now, as to any kid at home. Some- I how, this life develops strange likes ' a; d dislikes, tho it has never affected my sweet tooth. I have had several parcels from people in England, your cousin, Mrs. T. P. Fletcher, Blackpool, England, not being the leastas regards good things to eat. The conversation when "taffy" is on the board, is as strange as ever. You ask a man who is old enough to know how bad candies candies are for the teeth, how he likes the piece he took. "Ug-um-ya-ooo 1" is his answer, meaning "teeth stuck togeth- er but fine, thank you ! " We enjoy life as much here, if not more, than those at home. Still, if they send us back to Canada this year, we all make a vow, with lifted hands, to join for the next war--in the. tenth contingent. Mr. Drive is ooe of the best pastors and preachers among the vounger ministers, having been successful successful in every previous pastorate. He was Secretary of Conference last year which usually opens the way to the Presidency Rev. John Gaxhutt, last year's President, paid Mr. Delve a verv strong compliment for his splendid splendid work as Secretary of Conference. Everything was done up to the minute and done right-with neatness and despatch, as our old shoemaker used to say. Rev. S. T. Bartlett always commands attention as he is chock full of sane, practical ideas. As general secretary of Sunday Schools and Epworth Leagues Leagues he is doing a magnificent work for the church In his address on his work Mr. Bartlett emphasized the importance importance of his department by proclaiming proclaiming that the young people are the base of supplies for all other de- artments of the church. It is the business of the church, to develop life in harmony with the teaching of the Bible rather than aim merely to get people ready to die. Teach a young person to stand for righteousness and he becomes a valuable asset in the church and the world. Social and Personal Reeve W. A.
