Mr. and Mrs. Howard Stapleton and family, Oshawa and Mrs. Mary J. Morris. , Drono, were guests of Mr. ana Mrs., Everett Stapleton last Thursday evening and celebrated celebrated Everett's birthday. Mr. and Mrs. Golderman have left Orono and will make their new home in British West Indies. Mr. and Mrs. Rowell Bell, Kingston, and his mother Mrs. Bell, Bowmanville, visited Mrs. Mary J. Six ladies of the Orono Rebekah Lodge attended the 100th birthday party of the Oshawa No. 3 lodge. Fun Outing The pupils of kindergarten and Grade 1 of Orono Lockhart Lockhart Public School and their --teachers enjoyed a real fun outing last Friday, April 24. There were between 40 and 50 children and six adults as , chaperones to visit the interesting places. The first on the list was a stop at Browview Farms, Bowmanville, where the party mët the Miss Dairy Princess, Miss Janet Brown, daughter of the owners, Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Brown. The young fry really enjoyed the trip to the hay mows and seeing the "Srmnals. The second stop was Spent at the Don Staples pork farm, where the children met all the pigs, the little baby ones, ana up to the large ones ready for market. The final stop for the day wqs to the Orono Dept, of t al Resources ana here oup were shown through reenhouses and saw all tie trees. Horticulture Celebrations Dr;ono Horticulture Society i c§lfiorated their Diamond : on Thursday evening, ith a large -crowd in Attendance. Guests from Ajav, Oshawa, Bowmanville, Newcastle and our district director Mr. Allan Foss, West Hill, and Mrs. Dorothy Cracknel!, Cracknel!, Cannington, were all for this happy present, occasion. Before singing '0 Canada' the parade of past presidents, namely, Mrs. Eileen Billings, Mr. John Caldwell, Mrs. Joan Taylor, Oshawa, Mr. Everett Brown, Mr. and Mrs. O. Challice Challice and our president now, Mr. David Harrison, along with Mrs. Ann Evans, carrying carrying a beautiful handcrafted plaque and Mrs. Carol Mostert an eye-appealing and colorful banner. Donald Evans designed designed and made the attractive plaque, and likewise Mrs. Mostert the banner. All presidents presidents received rose corsages and boutonnieres. The president welcomed the large crowd and especially the visitors. We were happy to have Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Tink, our former district directors present with us. The secretary gave the announcements and the minutes were accepted as written. This was also our hobby and craft show and many attractive attractive displays were to be seen, ceramics, crafts, sewing, wood-working and photography photography display, courtesy of Mr. Edgar James. Mrs. Helen Schmid had a very fine example of her hobby of historical documents. Mrs. Joan Hollingsworth made and decorated the lovely celebration cake on the display display table and two silver tea services were on the tea tables. Pouring tea were two past presidents, Mrs. Billings and Mrs. Taylor, Oshawa. The entertainment for the evening was supplied by the "Country Four Quartet", consisting consisting of Jack Allin, Glenn Allin, Merrill Brown and Don Staples. As usual their renditions renditions were excellent and thoroughly enjoyed by all present. present. The president presented each with a lovely plant in appreciation. Lawrence Staples then showed slides "Through the years", and Isabelle Challice gave the commentary. A delicious lunch was served served to the large crowd and everyone enjoyed the reminiscing of bygone years. St. Saviours Church News The Rt. Rev. H. R. Hunt M.A., D.D., former Suffragan Bishop of Toronto, died Friday, April 24. The funeral was held on Monday from St. James Cathedral. The Rev. Andrew Brndjar is the field secretary of the Canadian Bible Society in the Durham, Northumberland and Belleville districts. Orono United Church News A capacity crowd was in attendance at the regular Sunday morning service, where the Bancroft communi- S 's choir gave the very rilling and stirring musical presentation of the life of Christ. This was entitled "The Witness" and was narrated by Peter, the first person to witness witness the appearance of Christ, after His Resurrection. The entire story was a challenge to every thinking Christian today, and the musical background background was a joy to all present. This particular presentation was the eighth time for the very talented cast of 25, and on Sunday evening, they would present it again in Springville United Church. Following the play, the large crowd enjoyea the tasty luncheon of sausages, pancakes pancakes and syrup, and also many took the liberty of visiting visiting with the members of the cast of "The Witness". Next Sunday, May 3rd Orono United Church the Hi C and the Inter-school Christian Fellowship executives will lead the service. Mother's Day and Tea and Mini-Bazaar, will be held Saturday, May 9, at 2 p.m., sponsored by Leskard U.C.W., Unit 5. There will be special music by Mrs. Gladys Brown, and everyone is invited to bring a mother to this special event. There will be a giant auction sale on the Orono United Church lawns on Tuesday evening, May 12 at 6:30 p.m. All donations must be in good repair and all proceeds will be used in the renovation funds. The 29th Annual United Church Men's Conference will be held June 5th to 7th in the Elgin House, Port Carling. For information call Willis Barraball. . District No. 17 Convention A good crowd of well over one hundred delegates and members of District No. 17, journeyed to Cannington to attend the District Horticultural Horticultural Convention, on . An excellent representation from the area, Newcastle, Bowmanville and Orono, and Bowmanville won the distinction distinction of having the "Best in Show", with Mr. Merlin Slute in the arrangement classes. The Orono Society won the best display, depicting the 75th birthday of the O.H.A. this year. They have been invited to present this again at the convention in Niagara Falls in June, as part of the District 17's display. She donated it to be worn by each succeeding president, in memory of all the happy times she had enjoyed in the fields of horticulture. The president's message stressed the urgent need of more tree planting throughout the province, not only for beauty, but for shade, ecology and conservation purposes. Orono News Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Colvin hosted a large family gathering gathering of 24 members in honor of Marvin's father's birthday. Mr. Ted Colvin, of Oshawa. A good crowd of Kirby people attended the special service in Orono Church of the musical play "The Witness". NEWTONVILLE Fifteen ladies attended the Quilting Course at the home of Mrs. Olive Henderson on Wednesday afternoon. The art of applique was taught. The Talent Night held in the Hall on Friday evening was well attended. Nineteen members of the Sweet Adelines of Port Hope District sang several gospel numbers with Mrs. Karen Shackleton as their conductress. Misses Janet Youngman and, Cindy Neal of Kendal sang three numbers accompanied themselves with their guitars. Rev. Haldenby of Newcastle then showed pictures and narrated them of the Yukon, mentioning the Gold Rush, the natives most Indians, flowers, buildings, clothing, winter scenes, and their national holiday celebrations and some of the "mounties". Sorry to hear Mr. Wilfred Paeden is a patient in Memorial Hospital since last Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. John Carlaw, Warkworth, spent a few days last week with his aunt, Mrs. Bea Jones. Miss Judy Brown, Toronto, spent a few days of her holidays with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sid Brown. Mrs. Lucy Weekes of Toronto spent the weekdn with Mrs. Leone Lane. Her daughter Miss Marilyn Weekes and friend were dinner guests on Sunday with them. Miss Darlene Elliott who has been training for nursing in Kingston, travelled to Moosonee by train and helicopter for 5 weeks at Moose Factory Island Hospital. She was one of sixteen girls.
